Chapter 19

Crystal woke up to bright light shining into the room. She stretched, and in the process bumped Nick in the nose. She looked over at him, and realized that he had woken up.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hit you," Crystal said, yawning.

"It's okay, baby." Nick sat up, rubbing his eyes.

"It's 2 p.m. What are we gonna do?" Crystal questioned.

"Well, for starters, I'm really hungry. I think we should find a small restaurant so we can go eat. We can ask the lady at the desk where the closest one is," Nick suggested.

"Yeah, that's a good idea. I'm starving, too," Crystal said. She threw her legs over the side of the bed, and stood up, stretching fully, her t-shirt rising considerably, showing her midriff.

"Ooh, don't move, you look beautiful," Nick teased. Crystal dropped her arms, and threw one of her pillows at Nick.

"Perv!" she said, laughing. "I'm gonna use the bathroom first."

"Okay. Just don't take too long. While you're in there, I'll go ask the lady about the closest restaurant, okay?" Nick said, standing up as well.

"Okay," Crystal said, turning around and heading towards the bathroom.

"Hey," Nick called out. Crystal turned around.

"What?" she asked.

"You haven't kissed me yet!" Nick said, pouting. Crystal laughed, and walked up to Nick, putting her arms around his neck.

"Well, come and get it," she whispered. Nick leaned down, capturing her lips between his own, gently rubbing his tongue over her lip. Crystal pulled back.

"Now we better get moving. I'm really starved," Crystal said, letting Nick go, and turning back towards the bathroom.

Half an hour later, Crystal exited the bathroom, wrapped in a towel. Nick was sitting on the bed, watching TV. He looked up when she entered the room.

"Hey, babe, the lady said that the closest restaurant was this small Italian restaurant about five miles down the road, called Jimmy's. She said we can't miss it," Nick said.

"Great. Now, go and get a shower, so I can get dressed," she said.

"Aww, can't I watch you dress?" Nick said sweetly. Crystal laughed.

"No...sorry..." she said, smiling.

"But we've already-" Nick started.

"Nick! Will you go and take a shower? I'm famished!" Crystal protested. Nick stood up.

"Okay, okay. At least I tried," he said. He walked by her, pulling at her towel.

"Hey!" she screeched, when it almost fell off. Nick laughed, and entered the bathroom, closing the door behind him. Crystal shook her head, smiling, before she went to her suitcase to pull out something to wear.

An hour later, they were seated across from each other at Jimmy's. They had already placed their orders, and were sipping at their drinks.

"Nick, where are we gonna go after here?" Crystal asked.

"I don't know, Crystal. As far away as possible. Wherever your heart desires. Where do you want to go, babe?" Nick asked her. She thought about it for a minute.

"I don't know, Nick. There's so many places I'd love to see, but I just can't pick one. Let's just go wherever we end up in, when we're flat broke," she said, laughing.

"Not a bad idea, hon, since we won't be able to go anywhere if we don't have any money and no gas," Nick commented.

"Yeah. But we need to get as far away as possible first, so we shouldn't waste too much money on anything, or buy anything we don't necessarily need," Crystal said.

"Yeah," Nick agreed. Just then, their food arrived, and they started to hungrily eat into their spaghetti.

"Nick, do you think we did the right thing?" Crystal suddenly asked. Nick's head whipped up.

"Crystal, do you regret running away with me?" he asked, hurt. His eyes were getting watery.

"Oh, no, Nick! That's not it at all! I'm so happy that I ran away with you! I feel so free. Like I've never felt before. But what I mean is, what if they find us, take us back, and my dad beat the hell out of me?" Crystal asked, fearfully.

"Oh, baby, don't worry about that. I already promised you that I'd never let that bastard of your father to hurt you. Okay? I promise you, sweetie. Don't worry about that, okay? Let's just concentrate on us, and forget about everyone else. We've got each other and that's all that matters. I love you so much, I couldn't stand to lose you," Nick said softly.

"Me neither, Nick," Crystal whispered. She grabbed her fork, and started to eat again.

"Hey, Crystal, what do you think about getting a new car? I mean, my dad's probably gonna call the cops, and they'll know what they're looking for, and we'll get found quick, but if we buy another car, on the down low, we'll be able breathe a little easier. We won't be worrying about being caught," Nick said.

"Hey, Nick, that's a great idea! I should have thought of that. That's perfect. We should leave your dad's car in the parking lot of the motel, so if he drives by, he can get into it. He has a spare key, right?" Crystal asked, sipping her Coke.

"Yeah. I'll leave the keys in the glove compartment where he'll be sure to find it. We won't take the car we buy into the motel parking lot, or the lady would be able to describe it. I'll park it like down the block or something," Nick said.

"Yeah, that's perfect. Now, all we need to do is find a cheap car dealer and we'll be set," Crystal stated. "Let's go, so we can start looking right now. We don't have much time."

"You're right," Nick said. He motioned for the waiter, who came a minute later. Nick asked for the check, and the waiter placed it on the table. Nick looked inside, took out his wallet, taking out two twenties, and placing them inside the check. The waiter took it, and walked away.

A few minutes later, they were outside. It was a very bright and sunny day. Perfect. Just like Crystal felt. She hadn't felt this good in ages. They walked into the car, and were soon checking the streets for a car dealer. They soon found one, and a little while after that, they had bought themselves a cheap blue Toyota Cressida for nine hundred dollars, with insurance and registration costing an extra three hundred dollars.

Nick parked the car a block away, and they walked the block to the motel.

When they were in their room, they flopped down on the bed.

"I'm so tired, and we've barely done anything," Crystal said.

"Bargaining is a very tough job, Crys," Nick commented. "But let's sleep for a little while, then we can watch some TV or something," Nick said.

"Okay." Crystal scooted closer to Nick and rested her head on his chest.

"Love you, babe," Nick whispered.

"Love you, too, Nick," Crystal whispered back. She closed her eyes, and fell asleep quickly, feeling that life was getting better and better each minute.
