Chapter 1

"Hahahahahaha! You lost!" Brian sputtered. "I thought you were sooo sure you were gonna kill me! This is just too funny!" Brian continued to laugh. Nick looked sheepish.

"Okay, okay, I admit I sounded a little sure of myself when I said I would beat you," Nick relented, picking up the basketball. They had just finished an intense game of basketball at Nick's house. It was another beautiful day in Florida, so they had decided to play.

"Well, you lost the bet, Nick...So you will have to do what I tell you to do!" Brian said, still laughing. Nick sighed.

"Okay. Bring it on. What do I have to do?"

"Well..." Brian smiled slyly. "You have to write a personal ad in the paper, and correspond with the first girl who answers the ad!" Brian said, bursting out laughing again. Nick looked horrified.

"What?! What kind of crap is that? Everyone-"

"You don't have to write your last name, Nick. You can put like NC, or something, and then write letters back and forth...say, about five letters. That's all. I'm being kind, Nick," Brian said, sitting down on the curb.

"Brian, you know I can't write for crap! What will I write? It was only a dumb basketball game!" Nick protested.

"Yeah, well, weren't you so sure you were gonna beat me? Well, now, suffer the consequences. Oh, and you have to write the ad today. I wanna see it in tomorrow's paper," ABrian replied. Nick sighed.

"Fine. But I'll get you for this, Littrell...next time I beat you, you're gonna get it bad!" Nick said.

"We'll see about that. Well, I gotta go, Nick. Leighanne and I are going out to dinner tonight. You know how pregnant women are...they're always craving everything...And tonight, she wants seafood. And I expect to see the ad tomorrow so don't forget." Brian chuckled. "See ya."

"Later," Nick grumbled. He walked back into his five-bedroom house. Even though the house felt empty at times, he liked living in a big house.

He walked into the kitchen and had a snack. Then, he walked up to his room, and began to write the ad.

"Why do I get myself into these things? This is so humiliating!" Nick said.

"Come on, come ON, Em! It's gonna be soo much fun!" Katrina Wells, Emma's roommate, exclaimed the next day.

"No it's not! I've never answered a personal ad and I'm not about to now!" Emma Paterson said frustratingly. She pushed her glasses up. She was an average girl, she thought. She thought her beautiful long brown hair was dull, and that her eyes were too big, even though many told her they were perfect. She hid them behind her glasses. She was about 5'6, and a little on the thin side.

"Look, Kat, I don't have time for this! I have a major lab report due tomorrow and I'm only half way done!" Emma continued.

"Well, this won't take long! I found the perfect one for you!" Kat replied.

"Well, then, why don't you answer the ad, huh?" Emma questioned, exasperated.

"Because I have a boyfriend, remember? He wouldn't appreciate me answering ads from guys. And I think you need to find yourself someone!" Kat pleaded. Kat sighed.

"Fine! But just to get you off my back! Sheesh, you're worse than a bug that won't go away!" Emma said. Kat smiled.

"I know! Now, look, this guy sounds great! He doesn't mention his name, just his initials, NC...but he left a P.O. box to write him to..."

"Well, Nick, it looks like you came through! I showed the ad to everyone!" Brian said, smirking the next morning. Nick sighed deeply.

"That's great, Bri! Now EVERYONE will know what a dork I am!" Nick said to his cell phone.

"It's all right, Nick..." Brian laughed. "Have you checked to see if anyone has replied?"

"That's where I'm heading now...to the post office."

"You could've given out your number you know..."

"I'd rather stay anonymous after all this. I rented the box just for this. When this is all over, I want it behind me. I'm not risking some girl stalking me over the phone," Nick replied.

"Fine. I'll let you go. Talk to ya later."

"See ya." Nick turned off the cell phone and threw it into the passenger seat. Even though he hadn't wanted to go through with it, he felt anticipation and a little thrill to see if anyone had answered his ad.

He pulled into the parking lot of the post office, and put on his sunglasses. He quickly entered, and walked straight towards his box. He took a deep breath and unlocked the box. His eyes widened a little when he saw a single envelope. His heart started beating a little faster. He hurried grabbed the letter and shoved it into his pocket.

It's just a letter, Carter...soon, this will be all over, he thought. He exited the post office, and went back home and up to his room. He sat down on his bed, and slowly opened the letter.

"Dear NC,

I saw your ad in the paper, and was interested. You sound like a really great guy, and I would like to get to know you. Let me tell you a bit about me. I'm 20 years old, and I go to the University of Tampa. I'm a sociology major, and I love puppies. I like to read, and write sometimes, and I love to swim. I have brown hair and eyes, I'm 5'6, and about 120 pounds..."

Nick read on until he finished the letter.

"Well, at least she doesn't sound boring," he said to himself. He got a fresh piece of paper, and began to write.

"One down, four to go.." he muttered.
