Kyle’s Breastfeeding Story

Kyle was born on Monday, November 8th 1993 at 9:54 pm, after only 3 ˝ hours of labor. He was our second child. He was born in a delivery room at the local hospital. Because if his quick decent he had black eyes, and a little bruising on his face. He’s scores were 9, and 10. I held and nursed him for a couple minutes right after birth. Kyle was a pro at nursing from the very start. All I did was bare my breast, and he latched on. Once again I had sore nipples for a couple of days. (No real pain.)

I took a nine month leave from work to be with Kyle and his older brother. So I thought for this baby, I would not need to pump. I was wrong. Kyle nursed every two hours for the first three months. He was a very fussy baby, and only happy when he was sleeping or at my breast. Because of all the nursing, I had a problem with engorgement. I would pump an ˝ oz of milk from each breast once or twice a day, to relieve the discomfort. That gave me a great frozen supply. Kyle slept in our bed from the first month. And by six weeks he was sleeping 8 hours at night, and in his own crib.

At four months the fussiness stopped. Kyle began sleeping through the night, and nursing only every four hours. At this time he also started to eat cereal. By five months he was eating baby food. Bananas were his favorite. By nine months Kyle was only nursing three times a day. He was eating table food. When I went back to work, I had no engorgement problems and no need to pump. Slowly on his own, Kyle stopped nursing. By 13 months he was only nursing at night, and within a couple weeks he stopped nursing. Around 13 months my frozen milk supply run out also. Because of the slow weaning process, I never had a problem with engorgement after Kyle stopped nursing.
