Alex's Breastfeeding Story.
I am currently breastfeeding my 5 month old daughter. She is my second
child. I nursed my first daughter for 10 months until she weaned
herself. She was a difficult latch on, and the first month was awful
until we got the hang of it. I loved breastfeeding for all the reasons,
convienience, closeness, and health benefits. Needless to say, I
couldn't wait to nurse my second baby.
After a quick delivery with no anesthesia, Hannah latched on right away in the delivery room. What a relief I thought. What a different baby she turned out to be, very sucky. By the 5th postpartum day my nipples were sore and cracked. I tried all the different positions, and read my nursing book like a bible.
Latching on made my toes curl, but I hung in there. Eventually, I had
three bouts of mastitis in the first four weeks, and at one point had to
pump and nurse only on one side, but I think I only supplemented two
times. My OB's advice at this time was to stop nursing, not very helpful.
I've since changed doctor's in my practice. I did finally heal, and now have a 17 pound just turned 5 month's today. She is eating cereal, but remain's
So sucky that I think I will be nursing her until she is 5. When she cries
the first thing my 4 year old says is that she wants the breast.
