Allison's Breastfeeding Story

I have a beautiful eight week old girl, Allison. I am enlisted in the ARMY so I had to return to work after 6 weeks. My husband very generously decided to stay home with our baby so she would not have to go into day care at such a young age. I breastfeed at lunch, after work until I go to work the next day. I pump at work and my husband gives her bottles of expressed milk while I am away. No one in my family, mothers or sisters, or his family breastfed.

I always knew I would, my instincts never let me consider likewise. It was hard the first day, and then she caught on. My husband doubted it at first, he got frustrated with trying to get her to take a bottle. But with patience and faith and confidence we succeeded. She loves the breast but will take the bottle when I am not around. Nursing helps me feel less guilty about working. It is a feeling that only breastfeeding moms can feel, giving your baby something no one else can.

We decided to let Allison sleep with us, and she loves it. It is so easy. She sleeps cuddled next to me, and wiggles when she's hungry. She doesn't have to cry for attention because she knows I will hear her and wake up and feed her. It has helped her adjust to the difference of night and day. My parents think I am awful for it, but I follow my heart. My husband wanted me to start putting her in the bassinet or crib, but now, although he won't admit it, sleeps calmer when she's in bed with us. I get more sleep, and I don't resent being woken up throughout the night like a lot of my friends with babies do.

I encourage every mother to breastfeed. It is the most wonderful experience and your baby will love you for it
