Chapter Five

"You want to borrow some clothes?" Nick offered.

"Guy clothes?" she raised her eyebrows.

"They're not that bad, trust me, I know," he smiled, she gave him an I don't think so look, "Or I could grab some clothes from Angie's room. She's about your size."

"How about I just go back to my house in my clothes."

"Will you come back?"

"No."

"Then no," he laughed.

"Why should I stay?"

"Look outside," he pointed towards the window. It was a severe thunderstorm.

"Great," she sighed.

"Is it really that bad to be stuck here with me?" he laughed.

"Sorry," she smiled sympathetically, "Your clothes would be great."

Nick went over to his suitcase and handed her a football jersey and a pair of khakis shorts.

"Thanks."

"I'm going to get a shower now, you can change out here."

Ali changed into his clothes an then sat back down on the bed. She felt about an inch big in his clothes. They were huge!

Nick soon came out with a towel wrapped around his lower body.

"Oh my," Ali gasped and looked away.

"What? Am I too much man for you?" he laughed. She didn't reply but gave him a back off look, "You look cute in my clothes."

"No offense, but I think I'll stick to women's clothing."

"Why? My clothes look sexy on you," he went to his suitcase and pulled out a T- shirt and jeans.

"I'd rather wear my clothes is all," she shrugged.

"Looks like your staying the night," he looked outside.

"I can't, I have to go home," she jumped up and looked outside. It was worse, "Great, just great."

"Why do you need to go home so bad?"

"Neil and Steve were coming over in...FIVE MINUTES!!!" she stomped her foot. She pulled her phone out, "Hi...hey I'm stuck at work. The weather's real bad, I don't think I'll make it home tonight...no don't try to come...I"ll be fine...I heard he went to the, um, the, oh what's it called, the airport to go home, cuz he has nothing to do the next few days...Yeah, check there, but if he's not there I saw we give up...Why? He has like the next 2 weeks off! We'll never get him. Besides I think there's a leak. I think he knows we're after him...I don't know how...I gotta go, I'll seeya tomorrow. Okay bye."

"I don't have the next two weeks off," Nick told her fully dressed now.

"Get them off," she demanded.

"I can't, I have a contract. The only way I get off is if I die," he replied.

"Okay, I can deal with this. I'll stay here and send those guys to California. We'll alert your family and they can stay at my house," she said to herself and Nick.

"You know there are 6 Carters not including me. If you don't have enough space..."

"Nick, how much do you think I get paid? Everytime you have a close call I get 1000 bucks. And that's not even my regular pay that's a bonus...Nick, I make more than you," she poked him in the chest.

"Okay okay," he raised his hands and backed up, "So how many cases do you get a year?"

"Um, well last year it was like 30, because I just turn in the people when I find out who they are, but in your case I can't do that, this year its not as much, I"ve had to run down a couple people," she explained.

"Because of me?" she nodded a little bit.

"But I like, i don't know. I don't like lying to my best friends, but you are my job." Nick was silent for a minute. He looked her straight in the eye and smiled, "What?"

"You so like me," he laughed.

"Do not!" she defended.

"Admit it, you do!"

"No, I don't!"

"You don't always have to act so tough you know, you can open up," he half smiled.

"I won't let myself get attached," she said to herself. She went over and looked outside, "Its not that bad anymore." She turned, but Nick was right there.

"You may be protecting me, but right now I'm protecting you. You're not going out there," he said sternly.

"Okay," she walked over and got her clothes, "I'm going to wash these, you need anything washed?"

"Well, yeah, but I'll come help," he picked up a bag of clothes and they headed for the hotel laundry mat.
