Chapter Eight

*** Two Months Later ***

"I have John in sight," Ali whispered to her watch.

"Get him out now, Anthony is approaching," her boss told her through her watch.

"No, I can take this guy. Let me finish the deal now," she turned her receiver off and headed towards John, her new client. Anthony was after him. They were in a crowded club. Ali was headed for John as somebody tapped her.

"Ali!" Nick said happily.

"Nick, get out of here now," she said sternly, "I'm working." He nodded, but as she continued, he followed.

"Hey John, I know you don't know me, but when I start talking to your brother Anthony duck, okay? I'm not kidding," he nodded confused. Anthony approached John a minute later.

"Hey John who's this fine lady?" he asked.

"I'm John's girl, you got a problem with that?"

"Actually, I have a problem with John," he started to unnoticeably pull out his gun. John got under the bar like Ali had said to.

"I know all about your problems. I'm a secret agent. Anthony, you're coming with me," she showed him her badge.

"Well, miss secret agent, you must not be that smart," he pulled his gun up and pointed it at her.

Nick was watching from behind and knew he had to help. He saw his finger start to pull the trigger and jumped in front of Ali.

"No Nick!" she yelled as the trigger was pulled. The bullet hit him in the arm.

"Uh oh," Anthony mumbled and started to run out, but Ali's backup team had just gotten there and stopped him.

"Nick, stop helping me," Ali said looking at his arm.

"Who else is going to protect you?" he laughed.

"Stop making jokes, you're hurt. C'mon, we have to get you to the emergency room," she held his arm and helped lead him out.

"It really doesn't hurt that bad," he told her as she opened her car door for him.

"Nick, I've been shot like ten times. I know you're hiding the pain," she shut the door after he got in and quickly ran to get into the drivers seat.

"I can't believe I ran into you again," Nick smiled at her.

"I can't believe you were so stupid. Stop doing my job."

"You're welcome," he laughed.

"Okay Mrs. Carter..."

"Oh, no, I"m not...I'm not his wife, I barely even know him," Ali corrected.

"He told me you were his wife," the doctor said confused.

"Oh Ali such a kidder," Nick laughed and put his good arm around her.

"Anyway, don't let him do any heavy lifting. None if possible. And Nick, don't push yourself into dancing if it hurts. Keep the sling on for 5-6 weeks and get a checkup next month," the doctor instructed. They both nodded and headed out.

"Why did you tell him I was your wife?" she asked curious.

"I still don't know your last name," he shrugged.

"Good, so if I move, you can't find me," she smiled.

"Hey, that's not very nice."

"Well, you don't need me around anyway. And I can't have you always trying to protect me. Nick, we're two completely different people. This is our final goodbye, when I drop you off, okay?" they were in the hospital parking lot talking.

"No, that's not okay. Ali, I like you, and I know you like me. You can't give up before trying," he stroked her cheek with his good, right arm.

"I don't have time for this," she shook her head. Nick pulled her closer to him and kissed her deeply, "You need to get to your hotel," she whispered feeling helpless around him.

"Stop holding your feelings back," he told her seriously.

"Lets go," she opened the passengers door for him. He put his right arm around her waist. He inhaled the fruity scent of her hair.

"Don't do this," he whispered in her ear. She rested her head on him.

"This will never work out," she whispered back.

"Don't think, just do what comes to you," he stroked her hair and leaned down to kiss her lightly. He kissed her again more passionately, "What are you thinking?"

"That I want to be with you."

"You finally admit it!" he cheered. Just to ruin the moment Ali's cell phone went off.

"I hate this thing on vibrate," she giggled as it tickeled her, "Hello?"

"Al, where are you?" Mr. Griff, her boss, asked.

"I'm in the hospital parking lot and I'm about to drop Nick off at his hotel."

"Get him there now. The shooting is all over the news. Reporters are searching for you two for interviews. And I know how you hate the media..."

"Right right, we're leaving. What's my new case?"

"Actually, I got a call from Mr. Carter. Why didn't you tell me you were getting married?" he asked surprised.

"Married? Me and Nick?" she asked eyeing Nick. He grabbed the phone quick.

"Yeah, do you think you could give my fiance two weeks off? We're eloping so nobody finds out," he told him.

"Of course, make it three weeks, Ali works constantly. Its time for a break, have fun, bye," he hung up.

"You have the next three weeks off," Nick smiled and kissed her.

"Yeah, but when I go back I'm suppose to be married!" she told him worried.

"Stop thinking," he kissed her again.

"C'mon, lest go," she told him. He nodded and got in.

"Stay the night?" Nick whimpered when they got to his hotel room.

"No, if we're going to make this work, we'll have to take things slow," she told him.

"Its not like you haven't slept over before," she shot her a half smile, "And I need someone to help me change my clothes."

"I don't think so," she laughed.

"Ali, we're both adults, and I need your help. I took a bullet for you AND got you three weeks off work. Please?" he pleaded with his puppy dog eyes.

"Fine," she sighed.

*** The Next Morning ***

Ali looked over at Nick still sleeping. She was glad he had been assigned to her. They would never have met otherwise. She couldn't help but think her life was perfect at that moment.

"Nick, what angel blessed me with you?" she whispered and kissed his cheek. He sighed and moved closer to her in his sleep, "Maybe what you told my boss should be a reality...."
