Freyja looked around at the world in amazement. It was so bright and sunny! The capsule had landed in a field, the location map in the capsule flashed, showing her where she was.
"I'm in Ruskin," she smiled, happy the capsule had landed in the place she'd programmed in. She knew that Nick lived nearby somewhere.
Freyja breathed in the fresh air with a smile. She could be outside and breath properly! She folded the capsule up small and put it in her bag. She looked down at her clothes self-consciously, feeling strange in her great-grandmother's tank-top and denim shorts. She wasn't used to clothes like that!
Walking across the field, she saw a group of teenagers playing softball. She smiled, stopping to watch. She wished that back in her time people would have fun like that.
"I need somewhere to live," she thought out loud. She knew Florida was famous for tourism, so she had no trouble finding a hotel that she could afford. Everything was so inexpensive compared to in 2100- her money supply would last a long time!
Freyja lay on her bed in the hotel room looking out of the window at the sunshine. She had only been in 2000 for a few hours yet she already loved it. The people were so nice and she loved the feeling of being able to walk around outside.
She turned on the room's TV and surfed channels. Freyja frowned. One thing about her own time she missed was the technology- TVs in 2000 were sooo slow and limited. In her time, TVs and computers were combined and almost anything could be done with them.
Freyja was tired so she went to bed early. She couldn't wait for the next day. She could start her plans for campaigning for the Earth... and she could go and look for Nick!
The next few days were spent looking around shops and meeting people. She'd joined a local club for people who wanted to help the world, campaigning for peace and controls on pollution. She would help them write petitions and give talks, it was her way of making a start on improving the world. Freyja was having a wonderful time, although the 2000 world had it's problems, it was way nicer than her 2100 world. She felt so welcome and at home, and loved the music. Most of the time she spent with a Walkman on listening to 2000 music.
"Are you a BSB fan?" Freyja asked a girl in a music store who was buying one of their CDs.
The girl nodded and smiled. "Yep! I love Nick!".
Freyja grinned. "Me too! Do you know where he lives?".
The girl paid for her CD then turned to Freyja. "I'm not sure on where his house is, but I know where he hangs out. My brother hangs with him often at the video games arcade near this mall,".
The girls got talking, getting on well. Freyja discovered her name was Deb.
"I'll take you to see Nick if you like," Deb said, as the girls walked through the mall together.
"Cool!" Freyja said excitedly.
"Where are you from, if I may ask," Deb said curiously, wondering about Freyja.
"Oh, an island in the Pacific, I'm here on vacation," Freyja said casually. It was half true, as her home, Thanatos City, was perched on a manmade island in the polluted Pacific Ocean.
"Cool, I wondered why you had a strange accent and an unusual name. But you're so pale, shouldn't you have a great tan if you live somewhere sunny like that!?".
Freyja shrugged, not liking lying. "I don't go out much and I don't tan too well," she laughed nervously.
Deb took the excuse and they started talking about something else.
"I can't wait to see Nick," Freyja told her new friend. "Will he be at the arcade now?".
"Maybe, wanna go see?".
"Sure!".
Freyja smiled as they walked towards the arcade. Deb was great; they'd only met ten minutes ago yet they'd already made friends. People were much friendlier in 2000 than in 2100.
She was in for disappointment when they arrived at the arcade. "Nick was here earlier but he's gone home now," Deb's brother told the girls.
"Oh well..." Freyja shrugged, trying not to look too disappointed.
"He might be here tomorrow," Deb's brother pointed out. "Come and see then,".
"Even if he's not here, it would be cool to hang with you," Deb said with a smile.
Freyja thanked her. "That would be cool, I think I will,".
"Stay for the rest of the afternoon now if you like," Deb offered.
Freyja ended up staying, enjoying the video games and making new friends. Deb was real nice, and her brother and his friends were cool. But she didn't tell them the truth about the time travel. They'd think she was crazy!
The next day Freyja sat at a table in the arcade, drinking a can of soda while talking with Deb and another new friend called Grace. The girls both liked Nick and often saw him when he went to hang at the arcade.
"I wonder when the new album will be out," Deb said.
"We should ask Nick next time he's here," Grace said. "I have a feeling it'll be August-time,".
Freyja frowned, knowing that, unless she saved him, Nick would die that month. But she couldn't tell her friends that!
"It doesn't look like he's coming," Deb said sadly.
"How often does he come here?" Freyja asked.
"When he's not touring, quite often," Grace informed her. "You know he loves video games, so this is one of his favorite places!".
"He comes like, a few times a week usually," Deb added. "But don't tell too many people. We're supposed to keep quiet about him coming here, he doesn't like hundreds of fans knowing and coming in ruining his peace,".
"OK, I won't spread it," Freyja said.
"You were right I think Deb," Grace said. "It's getting late, I don't think Nick will come...".
Just as she said that, a tall figure came through the door, dressed in baggy pants, a fishing hat pulled over his face.
"Nick," Freyja whispered to herself, her heart beating fast.
