Chapter 9

"Yeah, I've been home two hours," Nick replied into his phone. "I'm still trying to remember where everything is. At least at the hospital I got waited on."

"Everything'll be fine," Brian assured him. "Just focus on getting some sleep."

Nick laid down on his couch. "I'm so tired."

"Well, mono can do that to 'ya, pal."

"Ha," the blonde said sarcastically. "I know. I can't believe I got put in the hospital for a fricking case of mono, man."

"Like the doc said your fever was high, and the illness can damage your spleen."

"What does a spleen do, anyway?"

"You don't wanna' know," B-Rok replied.

Nick glanced at his reflection in a nearby mirror. In his neck were giant lumps had had swelled in his throat, under his eyes dark circles and his cheeks a deep crimson.

"Dude, why didn't you tell me I look like crap?"

"No one had the guts."

"Nervous about tonight's show?'

"Oh, yeah! It'll stink without you there, bud. You know that."

"This whole thing ticks me off!" Nick growled.

"Relax, you can't help it. You're sick. Everyone understands."

"I'm not that sick," Nick yawned.

Brian chuckled. "Yeah, right."

"The doctor said this is for my own well-being. What does he know?"

"He knows a lot more than you," Rok answered. "Now hang up the stupid phone, and sleep!"

Nick hung up as Brian said and slipped into a restless sleep.
