The next morning I was still asleep when
Nick came over. Me and Hunter
were both heavy sleepers and didn't hear Nick knock while Turn
got his stuff out of the car.
"Nick just go on in. Mom won't mind," he called walking
up the sidewalk.
"Its locked," Nick said as Turn tried to open it. They
rang the doorbell a few more times before Nick got really worried.
"Ali?" he called knocking panicked, "Ali, are you
in there?" Turn opened the garage door with the keypad. The
door to the house was locked and both of my cars were there.
"Something's wrong Nick," Turn told him scared.
"Turn, don't worry. I'll make sure everything is okay,"
Nick said kneeling to his level, "Does your mom keep a spare
key around here?"
I don't know, Dan might though," he replied.
"Dan?" Nick asked. He recognized the name. The guy that
broke Ali's heart
before him.
"Yeah, he moved in across the street when his wife left him.
He has three
kids. His daughter Kelly is cute," he rambled on.
"Do you know Kelly's number?" Nick stopped him.
"Yeah, 4ASMURF. That's how mom told me to remember it,"
Turn replied. Nick dialed it on his cell phone and found out her
spare key was in a flower pot in the garage.
"Turn stay here until I check things out," Nick said
unlocking the door. Turn just nodded scared. He as about to go
in when Turn pulled him back.
"What Turn?" Nick asked kneeling to his level.
"Be careful, Dad," He hugged him. Even Kat had never
called Nick dad. That
night had made all the difference in the world.
"I will," Nick smiled and ruffled his hair. That smile
comforted Turn in a way. He waited for Nick to come back while
holding onto the Burger King bag tightly. He stole a hashbrown
to calm his nerves.
"ALI!" Nick yelled cautiously walking in, "HUNTER!
ALI!" he called. He walked in the family room and saw me
sleeping there. Still in my dress from last night, "Ali,"
he shook me gently. I slowly opened my eyes.
"Hi honey," I smiled.
"Turn just called me dad," Nick grinned and kissed me.
"He did? That's great!" I squealed and hopped off the
couch. I hugged him
tightly, "Way to go dad," I smiled back.
"He's still outside, I gotta go get my son," he said
happily and headed for where Turn was. I had never seen Nick so
happy.
"I need to get dressed," I told myself. I went upstairs
and got Hunter up.
"Where's Daddy?" he yawned.
"Downstairs," I smiled. I picked him up and put him
on the ground, "They've got breakfast, so hurry before Turn
eats all of it," I encouraged.
"Its Burger King!" I can smell it!" he yelled and
ran downstairs. I laughed and headed to my room to change. I put
on jeans and a long sleeve shirt. I
brushed my hair a little and headed downstairs.
Hunter and Turn sat at the kitchen table
while Nick placed plates on the
table. "Hunt, I'm sorry I hit you. I was jealous you go your
dad back and I
didn't. And now I've realized that I have my dad back too,"
he said sincerely.
"Where is he?" Hunter asked confused.
"You dad is my dad," he said proudly as Nick sat down
at the table, "And
I'm sorry for making you think that a constant reminder of you
dad is a bad thing, its a really good thing," he said as
he got up and hugged Hunter.
"I don't understand what you said, but I know hugs are good
things, so
thanks," Hunter smiled. Nick chuckled a little and felt so
much ride for his
boys. It was only Kat now he'd have to get to join this bond.
"Thank you," Nick mouthed to Turn.
"Where's mom?" Turn asked.
"Right here cutie," I snuck up behind Turn and tickled
him.
"Mom, guess what? I had cookie dough for a snack last night
and I got to
watch the late late show. It was a re-run. Dad said so cuz he
was on it and
his hair was long like a girls," Turn blurted out.
"Oh really, cookie dough and the late late shoe?" I
asked Nick with raised
eyebrows.
"You're only young once," he shrugged, "Now come
give Daddy a hug, he
missed you," he said playfully. He stood up and I hugged
him tight.
"If you're my daddy, then its illegal for us to have fun,"
I whispered to him. I pulled away and he laughed a little, but
then gave me a worried
expression which caused me to laugh.
"Thanks for breakfast," Hunter said chomping on a french
toast stick.
"No prob," Nick ruffled his hair.
"I'm home!" Kat called from the front hall.
""We're in the kitchen!" Turn yelled to her.
"Wow, Turn and Nick in the same room...both alive,"
she laughed. Turn
seemed embarrassed so Nick covered up.
"You want breakfast?" Nick offered, "There's another
thing of french toast sticks," he smiled.
"No, I ate at Tony's," she declined.
"Tony?" Nick asked getting protective.
"Tony is the kids manager. He's like their best friend so
every once in a
while they stay over," I explained.
"Yeah, but he doesn't let us stay up of eat cookie dough,"
Turn laughed.
"That's why I trust him with my kids," I said pinching
Nick's cheeks.
"Our kids," Nick said softly and put his hang on min.
He kissed it gently. I gave him the warning look to make him remember
the kids were there. He smiled unsatisfied and let my hand go.
I pulled my hand back worried. Nick wanted to be able to show
his love, but couldn't because of the kids. I just hoped he wouldn't
leave over it.
"Well, Turn Mark's coming over in 10 minutes for your vocal
training and
Kat, your tutor is coming in 20 minutes, is your homework finished?"
I asked trying to take my mind off it.
"Yes ma'am," she smiled big.
"They guys are coming over at noon," Nick added in.
"Can I have a singing lesson too, with Mark?" Hunter
asked.
"Just watch for a little then maybe you can join in,"
I instructed clearing the table.
The table was spotless after I was done. Mar was there and the
tutor was
early so the kids were all taken care of. I was cleaning up the
family room when I came across the truck I'd bought for Turn.
There was a tag on it.
Hunter, I know you can't read, but I know you'll like this present
from
mom. I always did. I smiled to myself remembering that day.
"Nick, I'm going to get a shower," I said peering in
the den where he was.
"Wait up, I'll come too," he smiled slyly at me. I headed
upstairs not
waiting for him.
"Same old Nick," I laughed to myself.
