Once they reached the the hotel Nick helped Karen up to their room, tucking her comfortably into bed. After helping her slip into his oversized flannel. Then he brushed out her long red mane. He kissed her sweetly. "I'm glad to see you without a doctor or nurse present."
"Likewise," she coughed.
Nick handed her the cough syrup. "Here, sweetheart."
Karen gazed into his eyes. "Thank God I found you, Nick."
"Why?"
"You've seen me at my worst. Heck, I sweated all over you and you didn't even care. You stayed right by my side. Packed me around, brushed my hair, practically fed me. Hell, Nick you even helped me change my clothes."
"That was my pleasure," Nick smirked. "Seriously, it wasn't a problem. Not for the girl I'm falling in love with."
"Ditto, Carter."
"You fell in love with a girl, too?"
"Shut up, Nick!"
He sat beside her. "I'm gonna' be caring for you for the next two days. Providing your every need. I only wish it were longer."
"It's okay, Nick. I have a mom, you know."
Nick handed her the stuffed Flounder Kevin bought. "I know, and she'll be here first thing in the morning."
Karen clutched her toy. "Thanks, and don't worry my mom will love you. Especially, when she sees two beds."
"So, would my mom," Nick laughed.
Karen smiled. "You know it's weird. When I wrote 'Sweet Endings' I barely believed in them," she yawned.
Nick set closer to her allowing her to rest her head against his chest. "And what do you think now?"
She shut her brown eyes.
"I don't have to believe." She hugged him tightly giving
in to her weariness. "Now that I have you, I know sweet endings
exist."
