Coming Back

By: Caitlin Kyle

"Brian...I'm sorry, but it's not working. I can't trust you anymore. So this is goodbye. At least for the moment," Jenny sighed in frustration, tears welling up at the back of her eyes.
"But..." Brian attempted to make her reconsider.
"No buts, Brian. It's over. At least for now." she cut him off.
"Why?" he knew why, but was just stalling for time, trying desperately to make her stay.
"Brian, you know why!" she exclaimed, exasperated, "I can't stay with a man that cheats on me. Especially not if it's with my best friend."
Brian hung his head, "I said I was sorry..We all make mistakes..."
"That's the last one you're making here," Jenny's voice cracked as she walked out of the door and out of his life, leaving Brian standing there, his mouth wide open in disbelief.

~*~*~
It's not that I can't live without you
It's just that I don't even want to try
Every night I dream about you
Ever since the day we said goodbye
If I wasn't such a fool
Right now I'd be holding you
There's nothin' that I wouldn't do
Baby if I only knew
~*~*~

Brian tossed and turned. He couldn't sleep. Again. It had been a week since Jenny had left him, and ever since then he had endured sleepless nights, and hadn't gone farther than the corner store when he ran out of milk. He missed her so bad, and no one could change that. It had gotten so bad that every night he would dream about her, dream about holding her in his arms again. He kept seeing her everywhere, or at least thinking he did.

To find a way back to your heart
What can I do
To get to you
And find a way back to your heart

Once or twice he had thought about calling her, but given up on that idea quickly, as he feared she would either yell at him or hang up. His friends did not like seeing him in this state. The other boys tried to take him out, get her off his mind, but nothing seemed to work. He just wouldn't listen. And they just wouldn't get it. All he wanted was Jenny.

~*~*~
I don't know how it got so crazy
But I'll do anything to set things right
'Cause your love is so amazing
Baby you're the best thing in my life
Let me prove my love is real
And make you feel the way I feel
I promise I would give the world
If only you would tell me girl
~*~*~

What they had was so amazing, this phenomenal connection between the two of them, this unexplainable bond. They had been so alike, yet so different. This bond had been built up over a year and a half, and Brian had destroyed it all in a millisecond, with one simple mistake. That mistake had cost him the one girl he had truly loved. If he could go back in time to repair the damage he had done, he would, in a heartbeat.

Jenny had been his everything. His soulmate, his best friend, his lover. He had thrown his all into that relationship, every inch of his being. Brian was also somewhat shocked, understandably in disbelief of what had happened. For awhile he kept pretending. Pretending he would wake up and it would all be better, pretending he would find Jenny back in his arms again.

~*~*~ Give me one more chance, to give my love to you
'Cause no one on this earth loves you like I do, tell me
~*~*~

Brian believed deep down inside that they were true soulmates. He also believed that if this was true, they would find their way back to each other. If he had his way she would be back at his side with that smile that had the power to make his worries disappear, that winning smile that was so infectious. Yet he also had a strong fear and realization that Jenny was not coming back.

Brian would do whatever it took to get his Jenny back again. He dreamed up fabulous ways to prove his love for her, yet he knew they would not work. In the end it was his fears that won, leaving these tasks undone, and still leaving Jenny far from his reach. Which made his most terrible fear worse, his fear that Jenny had found someone else more worthy of her love than he.

~*~*~
I turn back time
To make you mine
And find a way back to your heart
I beg and plead
Fall to my knees
To find a way back to your heart
~*~*~

It had been nearly two weeks apart and already Brian was getting desperate. He was ready to do anything. No one could get through to him, and oh, how they tried. But they failed. Brian was beginning to sink deep into depression.

He lay on his bed, clasping a framed picture of him and Jenny, tears streaming down his face as he remembered what they had, and how he had ruined it, when the doorbell broke through his thoughts. He went to the door and peered out. It was Jenny. He thought he must be dreaming.
"J-Jenny?" he stuttered.
"Oh, Brian," he opened the door and she fell straight into his arms, "I've missed you so much!"
