Shattered-Chapter 9

By: Lisa Marie

~Almost a week later~

Nick laid on his bed with his eyes closed, listening to the radio. The music helped calm him, he sighed and rolled over. Things were starting to come together the way he had wanted them to. To him it seemed Brian was becoming more and more concerned for Lis so it wouldn't be long before they would be together. And Han, her timing was perfect. The minute he laid eyes on her he realized everything would work out.

Han laid on her stomach across her bed reading over her list of books she needed to have read for the first semester. She was pleased to find she'd read almost all of them in school so she didn't need to bother with them this summer. Han set the list down and looked around the room, her eyes stopping on a pic of her, Nick and Lis at her birthday party the previous summer. It was funny, but she could almost swear Nick was flirting with her now. 'Ok Han, you've had a crush on him for almost two years, he's in love with your sister. Stop imagining things' she told herself.

Lis turned the tv off and walked to the front door. She looked through the window and threw the door open. "Rok, what are you doing here?"

Brian brushed past her into the house. "It's been almost a week. Why are you still here?"

"Because I want to be." she said following him into the living room.

He sat down on the couch and his blue eyes stared at her. She didn't look well, her eyes were tired and she was awfully pale. "I want you to come home with me."

"Bri, I just need time to sort things out. Nick needs his space..."

"Tell me why Nick gets all this space all of a sudden? One day he goes into your room and the next your running out of the house as soon as you can and he turns into a zombie for the day."

Lis stood up and walked to the window. "Maybe I'm realizing things I never did before...like the fact I can't deal with all this."

Brian walked up behind her. "You don't have to do it alone, everyone's here to help you two out."

She leaned against his chest. "I'm not helping him any B, I mean I make things worse. He even told me I'm looking for my Nick but he doesn't exist anymore."

"So you're just going to give up hope? What happens if in three days he gets his memory back and you're up here moping around."

"I am not moping."

He looked at her. "Lis, this is moping and besides I think there's something you need to know."

"What?"

"There's something I need you to see for yourself and it's back in Tampa."

Lis pushed him away and went back to the couch. "If this is another attempt to get me home..."

Brian shook his head. "Look I just think there's something you need to be aware of. I don't know if I'm picking up on something or if I'm just imagining things."

"And what would that be?"

Brian knelt in front of her. "I think Nick and Han are starting to like one another."

"They're like brother and sister Frick." Lis said shaking her head.

"Look I don't know, but I think there's something going on. I don't want to ask because I know they'll tell me its none of my business but Lis you're her sister she'd have to tell you."

Lis looked into his eyes and saw he was telling the truth. "Fine, we'll leave tomorrow ok?"

"Good."

"I'm going to go upstairs and sleep, you can crash anywhere you want."

Bri nodded and watched her leave the room. From the way she moved he knew she was upset, but he didn't know how else to tell her.

For a while Lis laid in the dark, the only light being the bit of moonlight that came in through her skylight. She rolled over in bed, hating the fact she was yet again sleeping alone. Even though she'd been sleeping that way since the accident, except for that one night, she still couldn't get used to laying there without Nick beside her. She laid there crying till her door opened.

"L?"

"What B?"

"You ok? I heard you crying." he said, walking into the dark room.

"I can't sleep alone B, I miss him...his body...his touch..." she said through her sobs.

"Shhhh...." Brian climbed into bed beside her and wrapped an arm around her. "I'm here, and I'll be here for you till Nick comes back ok sweetheart?"

"What if he doesn't? Bri I'm going through hell and he might never comeback."

"I'll make you a promise, he will come back."

Lis rolled on her back and looked into his eyes, she'd never seen them look so intense before. "How can you be sure?"

"Because I've known Nick for ten years, he's my best friend and I know he's still there deep inside him." He answered, looking into her eyes.

Brian's heart broke as he saw the look on her face, she looked like a lost little girl. In his mind he remembered the conversation he'd had with Nick a few months before...

~Flashback~

Nick opened the hotel room door. "Rok! Good right on time, get in here."

"You know we're going to be late."

"We've got a few minutes, you know Lis is never on time for anything. Even something this important."

Brian laughed and sat on the sofa. "What?"

Nick sat across from him, a serious look on his face. "I need you to do something for me."

"Today isn't enough?"

"No today's great. Look...If something ever happens..."

"Nick nothing's going to happen."

"Frick just hear me out ok? If something ever happens to me, I want no I need you to promise me you'll look after her for me."

Brian stared at his friend in surprise for a moment. "Yeah man for sure. But you know nothing is going to happen."

Nick smiled. "I just need to know that my girl's gonna be looked after. Let's get a move on shall we?"

~End flashback~

Lis watched Bri's face, she could tell he was thinking of Nick. "I know you'd never lie Frick. Thanks." she smiled sleepily and soon drifted off to sleep.

Brian laid there for awhile, remembering his promise. "Just till you come back to us, and then she's yours again."
