I rushed into the house and quickly glanced around to find Nick. I didn’t see him, so I called out, “Nick?” My voice echoed throughout his house. I walked to the staircase.
“Okay…down the hall to the left or to the right? Or upstairs?” I asked aloud to myself and to Tristan.
“Why don’t you try right beside you?” Nick’s voice startled me. I looked up slightly to see him sitting on one of the stairs.
“Hey,” I said, glancing down at the stairs, as I made my way up to sit on the step beside him.
“Nick, listen I-“ he cut me off.
“Why did you kiss him? Why?? He cheated on you and broke your heart. How could you kiss him after that?” Nick looked at me with hurt in his blue eyes that I loved so much.
“I didn’t mean to. I was crying and he came over to comfort me and he kissed me. I didn’t mean for that to happen! I pulled away and felt horrible that it ever happened! I promise, it wasn’t my fault,” I explained, practically begging for forgiveness.
“So, that’s it? I’m supposed to just believe you and forget about it?” Nick asked.
“Well, what else am I supposed to say to you? That’s the truth…I promise! If you don’t believe me, I’m sorry. I wouldn’t take Craig back for anything in the world. I’d much rather have you,” I said, placing my hand on top of his and looking into his eyes.
“I believe you,” he said, almost in a whisper, leaning closer to my face. He kissed me lightly on the lips and then deepened the kiss slightly. The entire house was silent and it was just Nick and I…and Tristan, who quickly made his presence known by letting out a squeal of delight. Nick pulled away from me and smiled slightly at my son.
“I think he likes ya!” I smiled, looking from Nick to Tristan.
“Yeah…nice shoes!” he said, pointing to Tristan’s Nike’s.
“Come on…I’m starved!” I said standing up and pulling Nick up by his hand.
We walked back out on the patio hand in hand and saw everyone sitting there talking and eating.
“Hey! Welcome back to the party!” Brian exclaimed.
We smiled at him and took our seats at the table and fixed our food. We finished eating and were sitting there talking with everyone.
“So Kev when are you and Cheri going back home?” Maureen asked.
“Didn’t I tell you, baby?” Brian asked her.
“Nope. Well, I don’t remember. So, when are you going back home?” she turned back around to face the couple.
“Sometime next week, prob-“ Kevin began, but was interrupted by a high pitched baby’s scream.
“Sorry! I think I’m going to take him inside. Diaper change…” I said, making a face and grabbing the diaper bag.
I walked into Nick’s house and looked around for somewhere to change him. All of Nick’s furniture looked so nice and expensive, I didn’t want to change Tristan on it.
I walked back to the patio and peered around the door. “Nick, hon, where can I change Tristan?”
Nick turned around and got up from the table and walked inside with me.
“I don’t know. Wherever you want, I guess,” he said in an ill tone.
“Well, excuse me! I didn’t want to change him on your nice furniture,” I replied.
“It’s fine. You can go in the bathroom if you want. It’s the third door on the left,” Nick said and turned to go back outside.
“What’s wrong with him?” I whispered to Tristan, as we headed to the bathroom. A few minutes later I walked back outside carrying Tristan. The guys were still talking while Cheri and Maureen were starting to clean up. I went over and helped them the best that I could since I only had one free hand.
“Nick, ya think you could hold Tristan for a minute while I help clean up?” I asked.
“Uh…yeah, I guess,” he said, obviously not thrilled at the idea.
“Thanks,” I said in a tone equal to his.
I carried some things inside and on my way out, I stopped and peered through the glass window at Nick. When he thought no one was looking, he would make little faces at Tristan making him giggle. I laughed a bit to myself and walked back outside.
“Nick, I think I should be going home. It’s getting late and Tristan and I both need some sleep. I have to go to work in the morning,” I told him.
“Who’s going to watch Tristan?” he asked.
“I really don’t know yet. I was going to go home and make a few calls, unless of course you want to,” I said smiling brightly.
“Yeah, I’ll watch him,” Nick agreed.
“Are you sure? You don’t mind? Because you don’t have to, I can-“ Nick made me be quiet by placing his finger over my lips.
“It’s fine. I’d be glad to watch him for you,” he grinned at me.
“Thanks. I really appreciate it!” I smiled back, taking Tristan from him and gathering my things. “It was really nice meeting all of you! I’ll see you tomorrow, Nick!” I said, waving goodbye to all of them.
Nick got up and walked me to my car. “I’m really glad you came tonight. I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said, kissing me lightly on the lips.
“Ok, goodnight,” I smiled loading Tristan into his car seat and then walking around to the driver’s side.
“Goodnight! Drive safely!” Nick called, waving goodbye to us.
