Deja Vu-Chapter 17

By: Panda Angel

I woke up to hear the beeping of my heart monitor and caught the strong smell of medicine. I looked around the room and gathered that I was in a hospital. The door was closed and everything was really quiet. I scanned the rest of the room with my eyes and saw a jar of flowers on the table beside of my bed and saw someone sitting in the chair near me. The curtains were open and the sunlight was too bright for me to see who it was. I raised my head a little and there was a constant throbbing that I immediately felt and my head got swimmy again.
“Hello?” I called, looking at the figure reading a magazine.
“You’re awake! How do you feel?” Shay asked, getting up and walking over to me.
“My head hurts,” I frowned, placing my hand on my forehead.
“I’ll be right back. Let me go get the doctor,” she said, turning to go.
I grabbed her arm with my hand that had an IV in it to pull her back.
“Wait…where’s Tristan?” I asked, worried.
“He’s with Nick,” she said nonchalantly, turning to go again.
“Nick?? What’s he doing with Nick?” I asked, halfway excited, halfway concerned.
“I’ll explain in a minute. Please, just let me go get the doctor. I’ll be right back,” she said walking out of the door.
A few moments later, Shay and the doctor walked into the room.
“Well, Mrs. Bryant, I’m glad to see that you’re awake now. I’m Dr. McKinley. How do you feel?” the doctor asked, walking over to check on my heart monitor and my IV supply.
“My head hurts,” I whined, almost crying at the pain.
“Can you elaborate a little more on that, like where it hurts? Is it throbbing or a sharp pain?” he asked.
“It hurts all over, but mostly when I lift my head. It’s just a constant throbbing,” I said, wincing at the pain.
He nodded his head and commented, “Well, that’s good. You being a doctor, Mrs. Bryant should know that yourself. The things we’ve got to find out is why your head is hurting like that.”
I did know that by my head throbbing rather than it being a sharp pain was good. It just meant that I was having a really severe headache, as opposed to a migraine.
“So, what are you going to do?” I asked, feeling slightly afraid.
“Nothing major. Probably a few EKGs and we’ll take some blood samples to make sure everything is fine,” he said in a very uplifting tone.
“Okay, that sounds fine. Thank you doctor,” I said, as he left the room.
“EKGs? What’s that?” Shay asked concerned.
“Tests to make sure nothing is wrong with my heart,” I said, sort of afraid.
“I’m sure everything is fine. You’ve probably just been so stressed with Nick and the job offer lately,” she consoled me.
“Speaking of Nick…why is Tristan with him?” I asked, returning to our previous conversation.
“Well, I wanted to come be with you and I knew Tristan would be cranky so I called Nick to see if he would watch him,” she informed me.
“So Nick knows I’m in the hospital?” I asked, upset that he didn’t stay to see how I was.
“Yeah, he was going to stay, but since he was watching Tristan, he decided it would be better to go, but he bought you these flowers,” she smiled, motioning toward the flowers by my bed.
“Awww! He is so sweet,” I smiled, touching the petals of the flowers gently.
“Yeah, he is. He said for me to call him when you woke up so he could bring Tristan to visit you, if you wanted,” Shay said, searching my face with her brown eyes for a response.
“That sounds good. I would love to see both of them,” I smiled.
“Well, Nick didn’t know if he would come or not…” she bit her lip, noticing the disappointment lining my face.
“Why not?” I asked.
“He didn’t know if you would want to see him again or not after your break up,” she told me.
“Oh…well, of course I want to see him, but it’s up to him if he wants to see me or not, I guess,” I said, feeling depressed.
“I’ll call him and tell him what you said, ok?” Shay said, placing her hand on my arm.
“Okay, thanks,” I smiled up at her.
“Now, get some rest. I’ll bring you some lunch later,” she smiled, leaving the room.
I lied in the bed, thinking about Nick naturally and more afraid than ever that something would be wrong with the tests that I had to take.
