“Sssh!! It’s okay. Mommy’s got you,” I hushed my son, rocking him in my arms while waiting impatiently for his milk formula to get ready.
His loud high-pitched cry filled the room for a while longer until the little droplets of milk filled his mouth.
A sigh of relief left my mouth as I sat down in the rocking chair to rock him to sleep. Just as I had gotten settled into the chair, the telephone rang. I glanced down at Tristan, who looked at me with sleepy eyes, and carefully got back out of the chair and answered the telephone.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Dr. Bryant?” an unfamiliar voice replied on the other end.
“Yes?” I asked.
“This is Nick…Nick Carter, your new patient,” he informed me.
“Oh! Mr. Carter! Can I help you with something?” I asked, a little concerned and surprised at the same time to be hearing from him.
“Well, I called the office, and they told me it was your day off and I hate to call you, but I think I’m having some kind of reaction to the medicine,” he explained.
“Yeah, it’s my day off, but that’s fine. What kind of reaction are you having?” I asked.
“Well, I feel nauseaous and very dizzy sometimes,” he said and continued, “and I think I have a fever as well.”
“Why don’t you go to the office and see Dr. McKay? He’s in today and he’ll be more than glad to take a look at you,” I suggested.
“The receptionist told me that he was completely full for the rest of the day,” the voice on the other end of the phone explained.
“I see. Well, let me do a few things and meet me in my office in about 45 minutes, ok?” I decided.
“Ok, thank you very much. Bye,” he hung up the phone.
I hung up the phone and looked down at Tristan who was off in a deep sleep by now. I picked up the phone and called my neighbor, Jennifer to see if she could come sit, but she wasn’t home. Let’s see…Jennifer wasn’t home, Shay was at work, who was I going to call?
“Alright little man…I guess you’re coming with me,” I concluded, lying him down in his crib so I could get a few things together. After about 20 minutes, I was ready to go. I loaded Tristan carefully into his car seat in the passenger side and headed to the office to take care of my patient.
