The saddest thing about my life is that I don't remember a thing about it. The furthest back I can think is my funeral. There were a lot of people that I suspect I had known well and also some I never knew. For some bizarre reason, there were a whole lot of cameras. Too many tears and sad faces that didn't seem to belong along with my feelings. As I was carried out of the chapel, people seemed to take a step back and let me through. At the cemetery, I remember seeing about 25 people. Some old, and some my age, who I guess were once my friends. It's the wierdet feeling to watch your own funeral. You have no way of communicating with those around you, nor do they see you. I stood beside a blond guy that looked in his late teens. He just stared straight ahead as tears streamed down his face. I felt the urge to give him a hug, to ease his pain, if only for a second. But as I tried to put my hand on his shoulder, all I felt was air. Confused, I moved my gaze to the casket slowly being lowered into the ground. It was brown with dozens of flowers on top. I walked up to it and lifted a white envelope from the top of the casket. I carefully took out a white piece of paper. A coloured picture fell to the ground. I bent down and picked it up. It was of me and that blond guy. We were wearing black ski hats with names on them. Mine said Frick and his said Frack.
Dear Brian,
Well...I guess this is a final good-bye buddy. I know I'm going to miss
you so much. You were my best friend and the big brother I never had.
You taught me most of what I know today. From career choices, to girls,
you were there to give advice. It's still a shock to believe that you're
gone. It hurts to think that I'll never get a chance to talk to you again.
That I'll never hear you sing the songs that both of us were getting so
very bored of during the tours!
I know the tour bus rides will never be the same, and neither will the
tedious rehearsals before every show.
"Brian, I want you to make a promise for me. I want you to promise to
watch over all of us until we meet again. From the other guys to our
fans. This is going to be a tough time for so many people who love you.
So, make sure everyone makes it though this alive. And if it's not too
much trouble, could you come talk to me once more? Just so that I know
you're happy.
I want you to know that I'll always remember you and will try everything
in my power to make sure your memory lives on in all of us. I love you.
Love,
Nick Carter
PS. We MUST finish our Mario Kart contest! You're ahead of me by one!
I looked up from the letter to Nick. Everyone else was heading for their
cars while he still stood there. I wanted so bad to remember him. We
seemed to be close and must have been in a music group since we went
on tours and had fans. A tall green-eyed man put his arm around Nick's
shoulders and led him away. I followed close behind, suddenly unable
to keep far behind Nick. It was as if a magnetic force was pulling me
along behind him. They stopped at a black corvette. The green-eyed
guy sighed and removed his arm from Nick's shoulders.
"You gonna be okay?" he asked. Nick nodded.
"I'll survive. I just don't understand why he had to be taken away now,
Kevin. He had so much going for him and he was so happy" he said. Kevin
nodded slowly.
"I know. After all, he was my cousin. We're just gotta be strong and
get on with our lives" he explained. My cousin? He was my cousin? As I
looked at Kevin, I realised that he did have a resemblance to me; the
same strong jaw. Nick shifted from his right foot to his left and
exhaled deeply.
"I wonder if he'll read the letter. I asked him to watch over all of
us, even the fans, to make sure we make it through this" Nick said.
Kevin bit his lip.
"You know what? Even if you didn't write the letter to him, I bet he'd
watch over us anyways. It's just the kind of person that he was" he
replied. He gave Nick a hug and walked away. Nick looked up at the
sky and sighed.
"I hope you're happy Brian...wherever you are" he whispered to the
sky. He got in the car and I was drawn to sit in the passenger seat
beside him. He started the engine and drove down a long road. Nick
stopped in front of a grocery store and got out of the car. He walked
up to the building and I followed. Suddenly, a loud scream invaded my
ears. Spinning around, expecting to see some sort of accident, I saw a
girl standing a few feet away. Her face was red and she looked very
excited. She ran up to us and screamed once more. When she saw what Nick
looked like -- he wore a black suit and a somber look -- she stopped.
"Are you okay?" she asked. Nick shook his head no.
"Actually, I'm not. I just came from a friend's funeral and I feel
horrible" he muttered. The girl's face fell and she burst in to tears.
"Brian's, right?" she sobbed. Nick nodded and I suddenly felt guilty.
"It was depressing to say the least" Nick replied. The girl bit her lip.
"Do you want a hug?" she asked gently. Nick nodded and they hugged. I
used all of my energy and materialized in order to talk to both of them.
I stood in front of them when they parted. Nick looked over at me and
I smiled. He stared at me in shock. The girls gasped and started sobbing again.
"Hello" I said. Nick still stared, and the girl still cried. I laughed.
"Hey! Don't look so shocked! It's really me" I replied. Nick still stared.
"Brian?" he whispered. I nodded.
"Yep!" I said. He licked his lips.
"Did you read my letter?" he asked. I smiled at him and nodded.
"Yeah. Thanks, I love you too. I just wish I was really here with you"
I replied. The girl let out a loud sob and wrapped her arms around me.
Nick smiled as she cried into my blue shirt. She let go of me and swallowed
deeply.
"Why did you have to die?" she asked. I shrugged, and stroked her brown hair gently.
"I haven't figured that one out yet. Doesn't make much sense to anyone
I guess" I said. The girl smiled and looked at Nick, who was patiently
waiting for his turn to talk.
"Have you thought about the promise?" he asked. I nodded.
"Yeah, of course I'll do it. What else do I have to do up there?!" I
cried, pointing to the sky. Nick laughed nervously.
"Please don't leave me Brian" he said. My expression changed from happy
to sad in seconds.
"I'll never leave you" I replied. I waved good-bye to the two of them,
and vanished.
I kept my promise to Nick and got everyone through it. And it all seemed to work out in the end. I'm here now, aren't I?
