There was a gentle rap at the door, so I grabbed a few tissues to blot my eyes and told the person to come in. To my surprise it was neither Nick nor AJ, but instead Brian.
“Hi,” I said meekely, barely glancing up at him, still sniffling.
“Hey. Look I know we don’t really know each other and you’re probably not in the mood to talk right now, but I think we should,” Brian said, sitting down on top of the desk beside me.
“What about?” I asked, even though I had a pretty good feeling what it was he wanted to talk about.
“You need to decide who you want and quit messing with both of them,” he said sternly. His words were harsh, but I knew he was right.
“Everything would have been fine, if Nick and Hunter hadn’t got back together,” I whined aloud.
“So you don’t want to be with AJ at all?” Brian asked, making me think.
“No. Well, I mean, he’s cool to hang around with but I can’t see us together,” I expressed my true feelings to Brian who was sitting there listening intently.
“So why are you playing around with him then?” Brian asked me seriously.
“Well, let me ask you something. Don’t you find it ironic that I ran into Nick’s puppy at AJ’s favorite restaurant?” I asked him this question that I had pondered over and over. He sat there for a moment considering what I had just asked him.
“So you’re saying you think it was destiny that you crossed paths with both AJ and Nick?” Brian figured, assuming my thoughts.
“Yeah, sort of. See, that’s what I thought, but then I thought what did McDonald’s have to do with anything? The puppy is all that is important,” I explained to Brian who was now very interested.
“What you’re really trying to say is that AJ was just there, yet he has nothing to do with anything, but Nick is all this is important to you, right?” Brian so easily summarized my feelings outloud.
“Yeah, I suppose that’s it. It’s like it was fate that brought Nick and I together, ya know? I mean, what are the odds of me running into his puppy and then he becoming my neighbor?” I questioned myself more than Brian.
“I see your point, Kelly. Really. But, there’s a slight problem with fate,” he commented.
“What’s that?” I asked very curious, looking into his sympathetic blue eyes.
“Fate brought Hunter back to Nick,” he reminded me.
I nodded in agreement and realization as tears began to roll down my cheeks again.
“It’ll be okay. Just think about it, ok?” Brian reassured, placing his hand on my shoulder and then leaving me in the dark room alone with my tears and heartache.
