Touch of Fate-Chapter 8

By: Panda Angel

Unfortunately the moment I had dreamed of where Nick pulled me to him never took place. Instead we stood there talking for a while longer and then he walked me back to my house.
“Well, it was night talking to you tonight, but I need to get some beauty sleep,” I joked.
“Yeah, um…Kel, do you have a minute? I need to talk to you,” he said pulling me back my arm.
“Yeah, sure. What is it?” I asked, searching his face for a sign of what was ahead.
“About last night…” he started.
“What about last night?” I asked, feeling my stomach tie into knots, dreading what he might say.
“I just want to apologize. Obviously you and Bone have something going on and I shouldn’t have interfered,” he said, staring back at me for a response, his icy blue eyes glazed.
“No, no…it’s okay,” I said.
“Well, goodnight,” he said, leaning to kiss me.
I closed my eyes anxiously awaiting his kiss, but it never came…I opened my eyes and looked up to see Nick and Houston racing down the driveway.
My heart ached so much that I couldn’t breathe. I watched Nick for a few moments until he became a blur from the tears trembling down my cheeks. I opened my door and walked in. As soon as I got in, I plopped down on the couch and sobbed into my pillow. The phone rang, but I didn’t feel like talking to anyone. I let the machine get it as I listened….
“Hey Kelly. Is everything all right? You seemed really distracted today at lunch and well, we should talk. Call me later,” AJ’s voice immediately put a halt to my tears.
Great! Now what was I going to do? I can’t go out with AJ because I had feelings for Nick, but I can’t go out with Nick because he thinks that I have feelings for AJ. Why didn’t I just tell Nick that there was nothing going on with me and AJ?? Stupid, stupid, stupid I thought to myself, silently cursing myself for not being honest.
I decided to take a long hot shower to relax. Out of habit, I decided to go outside onto my deck and listen to the purr of the ocean. Though, the ocean isn’t what I heard. Instead, I heard two people having a conversation across the street at Nick’s house.
I didn’t want to be rude and eavesdrop, so I just looked over there to see who he was talking with. Hunter?! What was he doing talking to her?? I thought they broke up…
I watched the two a bit longer as they sat on Nick’s walkway talking. What was he doing with her? He was supposed to be with me. Oh wait, I’m with AJ….I thought dreadfully to myself.
I had enough of watching Nick playing with Hunter’s hair and tickling her to the ground, so I decided to call AJ.
“Talk to me,” his deep voice answered.
“Hey,” I said.
“Kelly?” he questioned, still a bit unsure.
“Yeah, it’s me. Sorry I didn’t call you sooner, but uh…Nick and I were out talking. But anyways, sorry that I didn’t stay for lunch today,” I apologized, not really focused on our conversation.
“It’s alright. So you were out with Nick, huh? I heard that him and Hunter got back together,” he said. His words stung, but I was sure that he didn’t mean to hurt me. After all, I was supposed to be liking him, not Nick.
“Yeah, guess so. What’s up with that? I thought they were through,” I said, suddenly very interested in our conversation.
“I talked to Hunter today and she told me that she really cared for Nick and owed him an apology, so I guess he fell for it. Who knows…” he trailed off, losing interest in the discussion.
Yeah, who knows….I thought to myself.
