Heart's Desire-Chapter 1

By: Panda Angel

Kelly glanced nervously at the clock sitting on the fireplace mantle. She slapped her magazine down on the coffee table and brought her petite figure to a rise. She glanced outside of the sliding glass door leading to the deck. The normally bright blue Florida sky was now ebony black occassionally changed by dark purple storm clouds passing overhead. Kelly watched the sky intently. Then, as if someone had entered the room, she spun around, her blonde hair flying across her shoulders.
“Sweetheart?” she ventured her voice trembling. She glanced at the clock again and noted that it read 10:15 exactly. She bit her lower lip and twisted her wedding band around her figer; both things she did when she was nervous or worried. Kelly walked along the plush oriental rug in the lamplit living room and peered into the foyer and kitchen. No sign of her husband was present. She pulled the curtains open in the kitchen hoping she would find her husband’s jeep parked in the driveway. To her dismay, his jeep was nowhere in sight. Sighing disappointedly Kelly closed the curtains and picked up the telephone.
“Hello?” a female voice answered.
“Hey Ang, it’s Kel. Have you seen my husband?” she questioned her best friend.
“No, why? I thought he would be with you tonight. Ya know…since it’s your anniversary and all.”
“Me too. He left right before dinner and said he would be back in a little while and that was nearly three hours ago!” Kelly informed her friend, her voice starting to tremble again.
“Ssh! Kel, don’t be worried. I’m sure everything’s fine. You know how your husband is. He probably forgot it was your anniversary and ran out to get a present!” Angel joked trying to lighten the mood.
“Ya know, I bet you’re right! Come to think of it…he hasn’t mentined anything about our anniversary,” Kelly settled upon an answer, the usual sparkle and light in her blue eyes returning.
“I told you everything would be fine. Oh! Before I forget, Brian and I want to invite you guys over for a little get together at our house tomorrow night. Think you can make it?”
Kelly quickly ran her schedule through her head and agreed that her and her husband would be there the following evening. The two best friends said their goodbyes and hung up.
Kelly turned to the kitched table and the plates full of untouched food reminded her once again that her husband wasn’t home with her. Kelly fixed a mug of cocoa and walked into the living room over to the sliding glass doors. She slid the door open and felt the warm, humind air and cool breeze sweep over her entire body. She slowly took a sip of her cocoa, making an obvious effor to steady her shaking hand. For some reason, she just couldn’t except the fact that her husband was out buying her an anniversary present. It just wasn’t like him to forget something so important. Kelly leaned against the metal doorframe and closed her eyes anxiously waiting to hear the familiar footsteps of her husband.
