“Excuse me, Mrs. Carter. I have your test results,” the doctor began, as Kelly pulled herself away from her husband.
“Well…?” Kelly raised a questioning eyebrow, all of a sudden a wave of nervousness rushing over her. She wished now that she had told Brian and Ang to stay to comfort her, in case the news was bad.
“I looked over all of the x-rays and tests, and I did find a little something,” the caring doctor stated, his eyes glistening.
“Yeah?” Kelly asked her blue eyes full of fear. She felt feverish and slightly faint, so she groped for the chair behind her and pulled herself down.
“Mrs. Carter, you’re pregnant,” the doctor’s eyes lit up and he smiled brightly at her.
Immediately all of Kelly’s fears washed over her, instantly allowing the color to return to her face and suddenly her eyes shone brightly like rare jewels.
“Congratulations,” the doctor smiled at Kelly and quickly exited the room.
Kelly sat there smiling and in shock, unable to speak. She instinctly placed her hand on her stomach, at the announcement. This was great! She couldn’t have received happier news at a time like this. She turned to Nick and looked at him lying there so peacefully. What would he think about her pregnancy? She remembered their conversation at the cabin a few weeks ago.
*~Flashback~*
“How would you feel if I told you I was pregnant right now?” she asked, staring deep into his crystal blue eyes.
“Why? Are you?” he interrogated, sitting his cup of coffee on the table, as his voice level rose.
“No, I’m not,” Kelly answered truthfully, the sadness reflecting in her blue eyes.
“I was just wondering how you would feel about it if I were.”
“Well, it would be ok I guess. I’m glad that you’re not pregnant, though,” Nick said getting up to get dressed for the day ahead of them.
*~End Flashback~*
Kelly looked worriedly at her husband, fearing his reaction, although he knew nothing of her condition.
“Nick baby,” Kelly began turning to her husband, but stopped at the word baby. Now all of a sudden that word took on a whole new meaning. Thousands of images of what was to come filled her head at that one word.
“Okay, let me start again,” Kelly cleared her throat and took her husband’s hand. “Nick, honey, I really wish you would wake up, now more than before. I need you very much right now,” Kelly paused for a minute to steady her quavering voice. She clutched Nick’s hand tightly to her heart and closed her eyes.
“Dear God,” Kelly began to pray aloud, “please please take care of my husband. I really need him here with me right now. I just can’t do everything alone. I miss talking to him and hugging him and telling him how much I love him. Please dear Lord, just let him wake up. In your precious name, Amen.”
With that, Kelly ended her pleading prayer as a single tear slid down her cheek. Kelly opened her eyes and looked down at her husband expectantly as if he would miraculously be awake. Of course, he wasn’t awake, nor had he moved the least bit.
Kelly was too emotional and upset to go home that night so she spent most of the night either wandering through the hospital, along the maternity ward, and in Nick’s room. Kelly reached the edge of Nick’s bed and carefully examined all of his features.
The minor cuts and bruises had healed completely by now. His dark blonde hair, although it had not been properly styled in quite some time, still looked great, like always. His fair skinned face was a lighter shade than usual, caused by the bluish moonlight pouring in through the hospital window. Nick’s lips were just as full and luscious as ever, slightly lighter in color than usual, but still very alluring. The only feature that Kelly couldn’t examine was his eyes…those eyes that never lied. They showed everything…fear, hurt, pain, joy, laughter…all of Nick’s true feelings. What Kelly wanted most at that moment was to venture into that sea of blue.
All of a sudden Kelly’s very eyes were being reflected and mirrored. Was she dillusional? Maybe it was just too late… Kelly blinked hard several times and shook her head slightly, but that penetrating gaze didn’t waver.
“Kel?” Nick’s feeble voice called to his wife.
Kelly trembled at the sound of his voice and her eyes were immediately filled to the brim with tears.
Kelly quickly pressed the doctor’s call button on the side of the bed and then wrapped her arms tightly and loving around Nick’s neck.
Nick could feel his wife’s warm tears soaking his neck and heard her quietly mumble, “Thank you God. Thank you.”
He wrapped his arms around her and began to stroke her soft silky blonde hair, and took in a deep breath of the pear essence that was still lingering in her hair.
“I love you,” Nick whispered into her ear, nuzzling his face against her cheek and in her hair.
“I love you, too,” Kelly managed to sputter out between sobs.
Finally, after weeks of endless torture, hurt, pain, worry, fear, and lonliness, Nick was able to hold his wife in his loving arms again and Kelly was finally able to interlock her lips with those lush lips that she had so longed to kiss.
