Kelly returned to the living room to rejoin her husband. She took a seat beside of him on the couch. At this, he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and glanced at her adoringly. With his wife’s presence in the room, Nick’s smile was broader, his laugh was happier, and the sparkle in his eyes was deeper. Everyone seemed to notice the subtle changeds in Nick whenever Kelly was present. After all the glasses of champagne had been passed around to the five couples, Brian stood up to make a toast.
“I want to thank everyone for coming first of all. Next, I want to thank Kelly for making my best friend so happy. I’ve never seen two people look at each other the way you two look at one another. I wish for both of you all the happiness in the world for years to come. Happy anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Carter,” Brain concluded his speech as everyone raised their glasses and toasted each other.
Kelly took a sip of her champagne and turned to Kevin’s wife. “So Michelle, how long have you two been married?”
“Four weeks today,” she gushed timidly her green eyes wandering over to Kevin, as she interlocked her hand with his.
“Congratulations,” Kelly said, smiling.
“Thank you,” Michelle replied shyly casting her eyes upon the floor and tucking a piece of her dark brown hair nervously behind her ear.
“How did you two meet?” Kelly continued, attempting conversation.
“I had known Michelle from high school, actually,” Kevin informed me. “I moved back to Kentucky so we could both be near our families.”
“How did you and Nick meet?” AJ’s very spunky girlfriend asked, changing the subject.
“Actually it’s all Brain’s fault!” Nick joked as everyone laughed. When everyone got quiet again, eight pairs of eyes were on Nick and Kelly anxiously awaiting their response.
“Well, Lisa, it’s very simple really. Ang is my best friend and Brian is Nick’s, so when they were married I was Ang’s Maid of Honor and Nick was Bri’s Best Man,” Kelly concluded smiling. Lisa’s long strawberry blonde hair that extended to her waist fell slightly over her bright green eyes, which sparkled in amazement.
“So how did you know that he was the one?” Howie’s fiance Tracy question, focusing her bright blue eyes on me with curiousity. The Carters and the Littrell’s all chuckled heartily at that question, while the other couples looked at them confused.
“I’m sorry!” Kelly apologized exasperated. “It’s just that-“ Nick cut his wife off.
“Let’s just say it wasn’t love at first sight!” Nick said as the crowd burst into laughter.
“So Kel, how did you know that Nick was the one?” AJ repeated Tracy’s previous question. At this Nick turned to his wife to hear her answer.
“Well…you know how it is the Best Man’s duty to dance with the Maid of Honor?” Kelly paused, searching the faces of her audience to assure that they were following her. “At the wedding reception that song called ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It For You’ came on and Nick asked me to dance. I refused, but the insisted it was our ‘duty’, so after much persuasion, I agreed.”
Kelly’s story held her audience’s attention and all eyes were focused on her.
“Go on,” Lisa insisted excitedly.
“Well, then-“ Nick once again cute off his wife.
“Then my stunning good looks and dance moves drove her wild, she fell madly in love with me, and the rest is history!” Nick concluded his idea of how it happened. Everyone laughed a bit, but hushed waiting for Kelly to continue.
“Nick and I were dancing, then he started crooning the lyrics softly into my ear. We swayed to the music and I was just lost in his arms. I knew at that moment I was going to spend the rest of my life with him. Believe me, I know it sounds contrite, but it’s the truth,” Kelly concluded her tale.
“That is so sweet!” Tracy exclaimed placing her hand on her chest and leaning her head on Howie’s shoulder so that her strawberry blonde hair fell perfectly across his back. A series of ‘awws’ from the females were heard as they snuggled closer to their companions. Nick slipped his hand into Kelly’s and squeezed it tightly. The couple stold an adoring glance at each other, then continued conversing with their friends for the remainder of the evening.
