Last Kiss

By: Caitlin Kyle

Nick tossed and turned under the covers. He couldn't sleep. Finally giving up on even trying to sleep, he sat up and flicked on a light. As he reached to turn it on, his arm brushed a picture frame, knowcking it over. He picked up the frame and looked at the photo within. It was of a girl with long brown hair and green eyes, her mouth upturned into a sweet smile, and her eyes laughing.
"Hannah....." Nick whispered as tears pricked at his eyes and he was once again flodded with painful memories.

**FLASHBACK**
"Why won't you tell me where we're going?" Hannah asked Nick in a mock whine as they sat in his Durango.
"You'll see, it's a surprise," Nick smiled mysteriously at his girlfriend.
"Fine....." she reluctantly agreed, "Mind if I turn some music on?"
"Of course not," Nick replied.
Today was the date of Nick and Hannah's one-year anniversary since they had started going out. He was taking her somewhere special, the only problem was that she didn't know where, and it was killing her.
As Hannah flipped through radio stations, the melody of a very familiar song filled the car. She left it on the station, smiling wickedly at Nick.
"Hannah, change it, NOW!" Nick ordered, "You know I hate listening to myself!"
"That's why I put it on! Ok, fine," she comtinued flipping stations, finally settling on one and leaving it there. Then, changing her mind, she switched it again.
"Geez, girl, it's like not physically possible for you to sit still for 2 seconds!" Nick commented.
"That's me!" she chirped. Then, slyly, she casually added, "So, Carter, what's your idea of the perfect date? Like where would you go?"
"Well, first I would - HEY!" he cut himself off, realizing she was just trying to figure out where he was taking her, "Nice try!"
"Well, it was worth a shot!" Hannah exclaimed.
They drove in comfortable silence for awhile, until Hannah figured out cleverly where she and Nick were probably headed.
"So," she began slowly, "Is anyone meeting us at the beach tonight?"
"No, it'll just be the two of us," Nick's smile turned into a Shocked look when he realized what she had done. He shook hishead in disbelief, "I don't know how you did that!!"
"You're forgetting I've lived in Orlando all my life!" Hannah grinned evilly, "Ohh, I am TOO good!"
Nick took one hand off the steering wheel and put his arm around her shoulders, "That you are, babe!" he complimented her.
Suddenly Hannah cried, "Nick, LOOK OUT!"
His gaze shifted quickly to the road and he grabbed the steering wheel firmly with both hands. Directly in front of them was a car that appeared to be stalled. Nick desperately tried to swerve out of the way, but he was too late. Hannah screamed loudly as the cars hit, with the loud sounds of glass breaking and metal crunching. Nick's head hit the dashboard and he blacked out.

A short while later, Nick opened his eyes groggily, his head pounding.
"Oh, god, what happened?" he thought.
He looked over to the passenger seat, and was almost sickened by the sight of Hannah, her body mangled. She had a huge gash across her forehead, and was unconscious.
"Hannah? Oh, baby, please wake up!" he touched her cheek softly, fearing she was dead. Her skin felt warm to his touch, and he knew his fears were not true.
Her eyes opened weakly, "Nick--just hold me until it's all over," she said, her speech slurred due to the pain she was in.
Nick's eyes brimmed with tears as he wrapped his arms around her, "Remember," he told her, "No matter what happens, I love you," he softly kissed her lips.
"Me.....too....."Hannah struggled to get the words out.
"And I always will," he began to cry.
"Be a good boy," she touched his face one last time, as if memorizing every detail, "Tell everyone I love them," she instructed. And with those parting words, Hannah closed her eyes on the world.
"No, don't leave me!" Nick sobbed uncontrollably, "God, why does it have to turn out this way? What did I do to deserve this? Please, God, bring her back to me!"
The response was mostly silence, except for the sounds of raindrops drumming on the roof, and sirens in the distance.
"They're too late, they're too late," Nick murmured, hearing the sirens.
Then he noticed that, unusually enough, the radio was still playing. Hearing the song only made him sob harder at the irony of his situation.

Oh where oh where can my baby be
The lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world
We were out on a date in my daddy's car
We hadn't driven very far
There in the road straight up there
A car was stalled the engine was dead
I couldn't stop so I swerved to the right
I'll never forget the sound that night
The screaming tires the busting glass
The painful scream that I heard last
Oh where oh where can my baby be
The lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world
When I woke up the rain was pouring down
There were people standing all around
Something warm flowing through my eyes
But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head she looked at me and said
Hold me darling just a little while
I held her close I kissed her our last kiss
I found the love that I knew I had missed
Well now she's gone even though I hold her tight
I lost my love my life that night
Oh where oh where can my baby be
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world

**END FLASHBACK**

Tears rolling down his cheeks, Nick kissed the picture, and set it back in its spot on his nightstand.
"Goodnight, Hannah, I'll never forget you. I love you," he whispered, turning the light off and laying back down. The second his head hit the pillow, he fell into a deep slumber, dreaming of Hannah.
