Annual Patriotism Contest Announced

January 16, 2004

Each year the Knights of Columbus local assemblies sponsor a patriotic contest to foster the ideals of the citizen patriot.  This year's theme reaches to the heart of most Americans.  We are asked to remember the contributions of our parents and their parents before them who served in defense of our United States of America.  The theme is "What does the U.S. Flag Mean to Me?"   This is what our students will write about this year.

There are three separate contests to support schools in the hometowns of assembly members.  Contests are held in the several Catholic church schools in Chapel Hill, Hillsborough and Burlington.

The rules are simple.  The child can either write a poem or an essay.  It must be an original piece written by the entrant without significant parental help.  There is one prize for a poem and one for an essay, six prizes all together.

Additional rules:  Grades 6 to 8, school and CCD.  Poems must be one page in length, no more.  Essays are 500 words or less.  There are certificate prizes for second and third place, first place winners receive a United States Savings Bond for $100.

The contest closes March 26th, 2004.  Local school officials serve as the impartial judges and their decisions are final.  Awards are announced in early April to the Knights and presentations are traditionally made during end-year school graduation or awards ceremonies.
