Hanuman is the monkey king, the General of the Monkey Army, the ever faithful servant to Lord Rama.
He is a popular Hindu God unto this day.
Many cities have huge statues of Hanuman, it seems to be a bit of a competition to see who can build the biggest one.
Which is fitting as Hanuman is the God of competition, athletes and warriors because he is said to have the strength and power of the Wind,
as He is the son of the Pawan the wind God.
Hanuman rescued Rama's wife, Sita from the demon Ravana
and that tale is told in the Hindu Holy book the Ramayana.
He was the hero of several such stories in Hindu history...
one such tale tells of Him lifting a whole mountain and bringing it back
when asked to bring a healing herb
from the mountain but unable to locate the exact plant,
refuses to fail, and brings back the whole mountain.
This Hanuman temple in Delhi is modern building but nonetheless rather striking and magical a site.
My 3 youngest daughters and I visited the Temple once in Feb. and again on March 1st (Holi fesrival day)
on our India trip in 2010. It was a magical place,
with amazing altars on multiple levels including a flooded underground cave level that was amazing.
