Men's Cross Country

"Since 1973, the men's teams won 19 of 26 Conference Championships, including 15 of the past 20. Additionally, eight individual champions have been East harriers: Jack Durkin (1974), David Hankins (1975), Steve Seaborn (1977), Kirk Hardymon (1980), Eric Landis (1983), Jon Stempa (1988), Brian Miesch (1990), and David Willis (1998). Since 1974, 92 of the 278 All-Conference recipients have been East harriers. The Eagles have swept both the Conference and Regional Titles thirteen times. In 1973, 1986, 1990, 1991, and 1992, the men completed the season by sweeping the Conference, Regional, and State Championships. For eight of ten years, the men's team also won NCHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team Award for maintaining at least a 3.1 grade point average as a team. Half of East Mecklenburg's Phil Hughston Award nominees (a system wide award to recognise outstanding scholar-athletes) have been members of the men's cross country team." -McAfee

Women's Cross Country

"East was among the first schools in North Carolina to have female participats in cross country, and actually fielded a full women's team two years before the State and Conference adopted cross country as a women's team sport. In 1982, the Lady Eagles swept the Conference, Regional, and State Championships becoming the first women's team in any sport from East to capture a State Championship. The Lady Eagles have swept the Conference and Regional Titles six times since 1982. In 1986, the ladies won the SW4A Conference Championship with a perfect team score of 15 points, and placed 7 of 10 runners on the All-Conference Team (capturing 7 of the top 8 places). Since 1980, 61 of 218 All-Conference recipients have been from East. Six individual Conference Champions have been from East with Jamie Oxendine winning back to back titles in 1985 and 1986, Leslie McCaskill duplicating this feat in 1987 and 1988, Peggy Martin winning in 1989, and Kathryn Daniel winning the 1996 title. The women's team has also won the NCHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team Award each year since the inception of the award in 1986. Eight Lady Eagles have been Phil Hughston Award nominees." -McAfee
