Chapter 3 - A Friends Day Out
Melissa was still blabbing on about Howie D, while Erin sat on the bench.
“La, la, la…Please make her stop. Oh, please make her stop.” Erin thought, as she sang to herself.
Erin looked at her watch. “Let’s go Melissa, it’s time.” She stood up and grabbed her bag.
Melissa sighed. “Yeah...” Then she stood up and pointed. “Hey, there’s Kate!”
Katie ran up to her friends.
“Hey guys…(puff)… Sorry, I’m a late…” She tried to catch her breath.
Before Erin could scream at her, Melissa did it instead. “Kate! You know you just made it! We were about to go in without you.”
Katie looked at Melissa. “I’m sorry Melissa,” Then she looked at Erin. “Sorry Erin. I missed my first bus and that’s why I’m late…” She answered, then she started to look all around the park.
Erin sighed and said. “Let’s go.”
Katie walked into the park first, while the others tagged behind her, so they could whisper to each other.
“Hey Erin, do you think she was trying to cover up something?”
“Yeah. Maybe something happened to her on the way here.”
“Maybe. But let’s ask her later, okay?”
“Sure.”
***Later the day
It was 4:05pm, and the three girls were sitting on a red blanket, talking to each other about some things. They’ve finished eating the foods, which they brought with them, for the picnic.
Katie was sitting quietly and ignoring her friend’s conversation. So she just stared at the lake, while she thought about things. “I know him somewhere…but. But from where…? His eyes were almost like…” She looked away from the lake. “Like Nick’s…” Then she shocked her head, to clear it. “No way! I can’t be…it must have been one of those Nick look-a-likes. Yeah, that’s right, one of those Nick look-a-like.” She looked up and continued to stare at the lake. While she tried not to think about the person, she rammed into today.
While Katie was watching the lake, Melissa leaned over to Erin so she could whisper something to her. “Hey Erin, do you want to ask her now?”
“Okay.” She nodded.
They both stood up and walked over to Katie. They sat on each side of Katie.
“Hey Kate, enjoying the day?” Erin asked her, just to start off the conversation.
She nodded and smiled. “Yeah of course I am. Why wouldn’t I? I love this park!”
Erin smiled. “Well, that’s good to hear.” She took a deep breath. “Kate, there’s something that Melissa and I need to ask you about.”
Katie nodded. “Okay. What do you wanna ask me?” She smiled at them and thought. “Please, don’t ask me why I was late!”
“Well…” Erin started.
“We just wanted to know, why you where late?” Melissa took over. “And I know it’s not just the buses. So spit it out it out?”
Katie tried to keep on smiling and thought. “Dam! Call about demanding and why are they doing this to me. It’s not like I ask them questions when they’re late.”
“Well…” Erin and Melissa said together.
“To tell ya the truth, I ran out of the house, in a big rush because I was too busy playing on the Playstation and I nearly forgot about the picnic. So, if it wasn’t for my mum coming in my room and asking me if I had the picnic on today. I wouldn’t be here right now.”
“Anything else you wanna say, why you were late.” Erin asked.
“No.” Katie said sharply, as she smiled.
Erin lifted up one of her eyebrows. “Kate…Come on, you should have been here at 12:05 or 10 at least. Even with the late bus.”
She took a deep breath. “Well…when I got off the bus I…I accidentally rammed into some guy, and…and that’s why I’m late too.”
“Are you okay, Kate? And, what did you mean some GUY?” Melissa asked.
“And is he okay?” Erin added in.
Both girls leaned towards Katie.
Katie looked at Melissa and answered. “Yes, I’m okay and I don’t know who he was…” Then she turned to Erin and continued. “And yes Erin, he’s okay.”
“I hope so…” Erin thought. “When Katie starts running, she can knock down anyone in her path.”
“Well, that’s good to know.” Melissa said.
Katie looked at her watched and then looked at the others. “Hey, it’s 4:25pm, I think we should get going now?”
“Fine then…let’s go.” Erin agreed.
“Hey, you guys. Are you ready for tonight?”
Erin rolled her eyes. “Well, of course we are.”
“Yeah Kate, why wouldn’t we be. Where going to see the Backstreet Boys concert!”
“And best of all…” Katie started.
“We’re in the second row seats!” They all said together, and then they began to laugh.
“I can’t believe we’re finally going to see the bsb concert. We haven’t seen it in ages.” Katie started to get excited.
“Well…lets get going, or we’ll miss the bus like, Kate.” Erin said.
“Hey! That’s not funny!” Katie shouted.
Erin and Melissa laughed even more.
After awhile, the three girls got ready and started to walk toward the entrances of the park. They headed towards the bus stop and then it was off to Melissa’s house.
***Meanwhile***
“Okay everyone! It’s time for a break, for an hour ‘cuz I think we had enough practicing for now.” Said a man with a loud speaker. “But we’ll have one more practice after the break.”
Everyone sighed with relief and ‘yeah’ for joy, that they can finally get some sleep or just hang out and rest for a while or just do something around the stage.
***Behind backstage
Some of the Backstreet Boys were in their dressing rooms.
Howie and AJ was lying on two separate couches, watching TV and they were ready to fall asleep at any moment. While Kevin was in a different room from Howie and AJ, because he was having a private talk with his family on the telephone, just to check up on things back home. While Brian and Nick was also in another room, they were sitting on the floor and both of them was counting on who got the most stuff toys from their fans, from last night’s concert.
“Ha! I told you I got the most!” Nick shouted, while waving some soft toys in Brian’s face.
Brian ignored Nick for a while and looked away. But Nick continued to rub it in his face.
Then Brian remembered something. “Oh yeah! Hey Nick, I gotta show you something. Just wait here.” He got up and went to get the thing.
When he came back in, he had a black book in his right hand.
“Here. Take a look at this.” He gave the black book to Nick.
Nick opened the book and looked at the drawings while flipping each page. “Wow…who drew this?” He stopped flipping after her saw a drawing of himself.
“I don’t know. But it’s by Katie…something. I didn’t get a good look.”
Nick looked up at Brian. “Well, where did you get this from?”
“I don’t know…I found it.”
“Where?” He looked back down at the drawing of himself.
“Well…” He sat back on the floor, next to Nick. “I found it on the footpath, this afternoon.”
“When?”
“When…uh…well, I guess, when I ran up to you, to tell you to hurry up.”
Nick raised his head, with a shocked. “You mean, after our basket ball game.”
Brian nodded his head. “But mostly, after you ran off towards the van. That’s when I found it.”
Then Nick remembered something. “Hey Brian, did you see a girl, wearing a green shirt…I think it was a Dallas Starz shirt, and she was running in your direction, before you saw me?”
Brian thought about it. “Yeah…yeah, I did. She nearly ran me over. Why?” He asked, with a cheeky smile, which said. “Nick, likes a girl.”.
“Well…” He started. “I guess I better tell him ’cause his gonna know anyway.” He thought and then continued. “I kind of…well, I rammed into her.”
“You what!?!” Brian shouted and stood up. “Was she a fan of ours? Was she hurt?”
Nick glided his hands, through his soft blond hair, as he looked down at the ground.
Brian sighed and thought. “There’s no point of getting mad over this…” He sat back down. “Nick, I’m sorry…I shouldn’t have shouted at y-”
Nick lifted his head back up and started at him, with his baby blue eyes. “I…I don’t know…I don’t know if she’s a fan and I don’t know if she’s okay. Well, I guess she would be because she actually helped…” He stopped.
Brian leaned forward and the expression on his face, that was gonna explode with laugher. “She actually helped…yeah. Go on, Nick.”
“She…um…helped me up...anyway, who cares!” Nick snapped.
Brian gave a huge grinned. “Yeah, okay Nick. It’s no big deal, okay? Well, did you get her name?”
“Yeah…” Nick said in a shy tone.
“Well come on! Don’t leave me hangin’ here. What’s her name?” Brian demanded.
“Her names…Katie.”
Brian froze for a while.
“What wrong?”
“She…umm…Nick. I think she’s drew those pictures of us.” He pointed out.
“What!?!” Nick was shocked by the news. “Then that means, she’s a…”
Brian nodded. “Yep, she’s a fan, alright.”
“Great…but how are we going to give this back to her?” Nick waved the book around.
“Well, she might be at the concert tonight and if you do see her, you can…um?”
“Drag her on stage and give her book back.” Nick said, in a sarcastic way.
“Great idea, Nick!” Brian began to laugh.
“Brian, this is not funny…” Nick couldn’t help laughing as well.
Through the hour, Nick and Brian thought of some things, of what they could do. But they couldn’t think of anything that would work, so they played some computer games for a while.
***An hour later***
The three girls were at Melissa’s house. They were getting ready for the Backstreet Boys concert.
They were getting changed into their cloths. Melissa was combing her hair and she wore a long sleeves white top and her blue and white striped tight jeans. While Erin was in the middle of getting dressed in the bathroom, but she was wearing her black and white strips t-shirt and her dark blue jeans. Katie was waiting for Erin to finish getting changed. So she placed her cloths on Melissa's bed, while she trashed through her bag. She was planning to wear a black t-shirt with green sleeves on top with black on the bottom and her black jeans.
“Where is it!” Katie yelled.
Melissa turned around as she just finished fixing her hair up. “What’s wrong?”
“I’ve…I’ve lost my drawing book!” Tears started to pour down her face.
Erin just came out of the bathroom. “Hey Kate, I’ve finished, it’s…what’s the matter?”
Erin and Melissa walk towards Katie and sat down next to her.
“What’s wrong, Kate?” Erin asked.
“She lost her drawing book.” Melissa answered, for Katie.
Katie curled herself up like a ball, while she tried to remember what happen to her drawing book.
“Well, was it the drawing book, that you have never let anybody and that’s including your friends, touch it?”
“Yes…” Katie said in a soft voice.
Melissa stood up. “Great just, great! You know, it might be at home?”
“I don’t think so…”
When it comes to being on time, Erin was the one to stress out but when it comes up to loosing things, Melissa would be the one to stress out.
“Why did you take it with you anyway, expressly, if you don’t let anybody touch it!?!” Melissa asked.
Katie didn’t answer her and thought. “Because I was suppose show it to you guys and to see what you thought of my drawings…” Her eyes started to water even more.
“Well, Kate why did you bring it?” Erin asked, her voice was soft and caring.
“Don’t you remember?” Katie lifted her head and looked at her. “I was suppose to show you guys.”
“Oh yeah…you were.” Melissa sat back down.
“Did you guys see me running with my drawing book, when I came into the park?”
Melissa and Erin looked at each other and replied. “No. Sorry.”
“Great.” Katie mumbled. She tucked herself into a ball again.
“Hey Kate,” Erin said. “Do you want us to leave you alone for a while?”
She didn’t answer.
“I’ll take that as a yes…lets go, Melissa.”
Erin and Melissa stood up and left the room. Katie was still sitting on the floor next to the bed.
“If it’s not at the park, where could it be…all of my work… flushed down the drain.” She thought.
Then she got up and grabbed her cloths on the bed and walked towards the bathroom to get changed.
“(Sign)…Where could my book be? I had it when I left the bus and I remember running with it…but.” Then she remembered ramming into the person around the corner. “Oh no! I must have left my book there…(sign)…Great, what am I going to do!?!”
***At the same time***
Behind backstage, the Backstreet Boys were in the meeting room.
“Hey, it’s your turn to take the dare, Nick! I took it last time and the others already had their turn.” AJ said.
All of the Backstreet Boys members were sitting on chairs or couches. They all wore a different colour tracksuit, for their performance on soon. Kevin wore a black, AJ wore a yellow, Nick wore a green, Brian wore a blue and Howie wore a red.
AJ pulled out a box with strips of papers in it. “Well Nick, what ‘cha waiting for, pick one.”
The rest of the Backstreet Boys watch as Nick placed his hand in and then pulled out a white piece of paper out.
“Well…what is it?” Brian said.
Nick opened the paper. “It’s number…31.”
“Well Nick…have fun with her and sing it good and with passion, will ya?” AJ said, with a cheeky grin.
“I’ll try to.” Nick said in a dull voice. He opened the drawing book, just to look at the drawings of himself and he sighed with a smile.
AJ leaned over to Nick. “What ‘cha looking at?”
“Just some drawings.”
“Just some drawings!?!” He snatched the book away from Nick and walked over to the other side of the room.
“Give it back!” Nick stood up from his chair.
“Oooo…touchy, aren’t we?” He teased.
“AJ, just give the book back to him.” Kevin said.
AJ flipped through the book, until he saw the drawings of Nick.
“Oh my…this is nice!”
“Give it back to me now, AJ!” Nick shouted.
AJ flipped the book over, so that the rest of the bsb could see what he was looking at.
“What do we have here, Nick? It’s you.”
Nick ran up to AJ and shoved him, but while AJ stumbled back, he grabbed the book back, just in time.
Everyone got up and ran over to Nick and AJ.
“Hey, what’s you problem, man?” AJ asked.
Howie helped AJ to get up.
“You’re my problem…why did you show this to everyone?” He waved the book in AJ’s face.
“I thought it was one of your drawing books.”
“Well, it’s not!”
Nick opened the door and stormed out of the room.
“I better go after him. I’ll see you guys later.” Brian said.
Brian left the room and closed the door.
“What just happened?” Howie asked.
“I don’t know, but AJ, I think you better apologise to Nick before the show starts, okay?” Kevin said.
“And if you don’t, will be having Godzilla and King Kong on stage, tonight.” Howie joked.
Everyone laughed at Howie’s joke.
“Ha, I guess so. I guess I shouldn’t have snatched the book off him.” AJ said. “But I’ll apologise later, right now I think I’ll just let him cool down for awhile.”
Howie and Kevin agreed with AJ’s last words. Then they all sat back down and began to talk about what they’re going to do in the concert.
***Meanwhile***
“Nick, what’s wrong with you!?!” Brian said, after he closed the door of the dressing room.
Nick turned around and clenched onto the book even tighter.
“How could AJ do that?” Nick answered.
“You know AJ, he’s just having fun.”
“Ha, yeah right.”
Brian then thought to himself, as Nick turned away from him to sit down on a chair. “Why is he protecting that book? Does it mean that much to him?”
He walked up to Nick and grabbed a chair that was close to him and drags it near Nick. “Nick, why are you protecting that book?”
Nick looked up at him. “I’m not! …I’m…I’m just keeping it safe.”
Brian then remembered something that Nick told him earlier that day. “Nick, remember when you rammed into the girl...Katie, right?”
“Yeah…why?” Nick asked, he began to rock on the chair.
“Remember when she helped you up?”
“Yeah, so what?”
“Well, how did you feel at the time.”
“Why should I tell you!” Nick snapped.
Brian got up and smiled at him.
“What?”
He lends towards Nick.
“Are you okay, B?” Nick started to freak out a bit.
“You like her don’t you?”
“What!?!” Nick fell backwards on his chair, because he rocked a bit too far back.
“I said, you like her, don’t you?” He walked next to Nick and bobbed down.
“Me? No way.” Nick shook his head.
Brian helped Nick back up. Then he sat back down on his chair, while Nick picked up his chair from the ground and sat back down on it.
“Come on Nick, tell the truth. I’m you best friend…you can tell me anything.” Brian putted on a cute baby face towards Nick.
“Maybe I do and maybe I don’t…I really, don’t know.”
“Fine then. I’ll believe you.” He sighed.
Nick looked at his watch.
“Well, there’s only an hour and a half to go.” Nick said.
“Lets get going then. The others should be waiting for us.” Then he remembered to ask Nick something. “Oh yeah. Nick, are you ready for your dare?”
Nick smiled. “Of course I am. You guys done an okay job with you dare. Right?”
Brian smiled and placed his arm over Nick’s shoulder. “Right.”
Nick opened the door and then they walked out, to join the other bsb members.
