Oh to be back in Egypt… in March when it’s not yet too warm When the biggest crowds of tourists have yet to swarm To be the first through the gate just after sunrise Standing all alone gazing up into the ancient Sphinx’s eyes To sit atop a camel on a sea of sparkling sand below Riding along in the great pyramid’s mystical shadow To sail down the River Nile watching the birds fly Like people have done for thousands of years gone by To look up into the Sun God Ra’s golden shining orb As He sets over the Giza plateau, a mystic sight to absorb To sit watching for the moon Goddess Isis to appear With her veil of stars adorning her luminous sphere Oh to be back in Egypt… under Saqqara’s sky as blue as lapis Wandering by the step pyramid and through the mastabas To travel through the villages along the river Nile As everyone greets me with ‘welcome to Egypt’ and a smile. To ride through Cairo in fearless driver’s car And say ‘take me to the Museum and then to a bazaar’ Trying to fit the most sight seeing into each and every minute Because just a week in Egypt isn’t long enough of a visit To sip Karkady as I shop for trinkets and babbles to pack To remind me of Egypt, until I can some day get back To be up late in the hotel planning the next day’s excitement With so much to see, so many ways for so little time to be spent Oh to be back in Egypt….once again… in the spring To once again get to savor seeing and doing everything That was such an adventure the first time I got to go To repeat again that magical trip that I treasured so.
