1864 SUBSTITUTE VOLUNTEER ENLISTMENT

I Dennis McCarty born in Ireland aged 20 years and by occupation
a farmer do hereby acknowledge to have agreed with said James
Patterson, esq. of Varick, to become his substitute in Military
Service, for a sufficient consideration paid and delivered to me,
on the 2nd day of September, 1864 and having thus agreed with
said James Patterson I do hereby acknowledge to have enlisted
this 2nd day of September, 1864 to serve as a SOLDIER in the ARMY
OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA for the period of 1 year. ...
Sworn and subscribed to at Auburn, NY this 23 day of September
1864 before Mr R Stori Justice of the Peace. ...
This soldier has dark gray eyes, black hair, dark complexion; is
5 feet 4 inches high.

1864 - On Dec 26, 1882, Dennis McCarthy
signed the following with 'X'
'Sept 4, 1864 enlisted in Company B 64th New York Infantry.
Resided in Ireland up to about 16 months before enlistment. Lived
about 16 months in Auburn, Cayuga County. My occupation is
laborer and teamster. The disability for which I claim a pension
arises from Rheumatism which was contracted at Fort Haskell in
front of Petersburg, VA in or about the month of December 1864
from exposure and having to lay in wet and damp ground and in
water while doing duty and being tired out had to lay in water
and exposed to the rain and wet.'
1865 Dennis McCarty Pvt Co B 64 Reg't NY Infantry Appears on CO MUSTER-OUT ROLL dated nr. Washington, DC July 14, 1865 last paid Dec 31, 1864. Discharged May 30, 1865 in compliance with GO No 94 from War Dept dated May 15, 1865
