"Dedicated to the Preservation of Southern Heritage"North Carolina ChapterConfederate flag banned at high schoolBy Associated Press, 3/7/2001 03:09WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) The Confederate flag has been banned from Warren Hills Regional High School. The ban, part of a recently approved racial harassment policy, will go into effect on Monday, Superintendent Peter Merluzzi said. The policy bars students and faculty from possessing any written material that is racially divisive or creates ill will or hatred, including items that refer to the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nation, White supremacy and Black power. Merluzzi said any student who violates the policy would be suspended or also could be expelled. ''I would hope (the students) use some common sense now,'' Merluzzi told The Express-Times of Easton, Pa., for Wednesday's editions. Black students, who make up about 2 percent of the school's population, have complained that the flag is offensive and intimidating. But several white students have said they should be allowed to wear clothing that displays the flag because it is part of their "heritage." "It's not a heritage issue if you were born in Washington, New Jersey," Merluzzi said. The school first considered banning such clothing in September after two white students were suspended for parading the flag through a hallway and telling racist jokes.
