Sids
Information
Facts about Sids (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)
(Sids) is the sudden death of an infant under one year of age that
remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including the
performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and
review of the clinical history. It is one of the leading causes of
infant death between one month and one year of age. (Although it can
happen at anytime in the infants life as my daughter passed away of
SIDS when she was 3 days old and had all the stuff above done.)
In the United States alone, SIDS, sometimes called crib or cot death
is responsible for the death of between 5,000 and 7,000 infants each
year. It is estimated that up to 2 deaths per 1,000 live births will
be caused by SIDS.
While there are still no adequate medical explanations for SIDS
deaths, most researchers now believe that babies who die of SIDS are
born with one or more conditions that make them especially vulnerable
to stresses (both internal and external) that occur in the normal
life of an infant.
Currently these problems, whether biochemical, anatomical or
developmental, remains a mystery. It is probable that SIDS, like many
other physical disorders, will eventually be proven to be caused by a
combination of factors.
SIDS
IS:
* A definite medical entity and a leading cause of death in
infants between 1 month and 1 year of age.
* Sudden and silent - the infant seemingly appears healthy other than a
possible cold or infection
* Currently unpredictable and unpreventable
* A death that occurs very rapidly, usually during sleep and with no
signs of suffering.
SIDS
IS NOT:
* caused by external suffocation
* caused by vomiting and choking
*caused by diphtheria, pertusis, tetanus (DPT) vaccine or other
immunization
* contagious
* Child Abuse
* the cause of every unexpected infant death.
