According to police, the Jeep was traveling north on Fayetteville Street when it ran off the road in a slight curve near Burlington Avenue. The vehicle left no skid marks as it drove into a utility pole and came to rest in the corner of a house at 2403 Fayetteville St.
Duke Power crews worked throughout the morning to replace the utility pole and transfer dozens of power lines. Workers from local phone and cable companies were expected to repair their own lines later Wednesday. Residents along the 2400 block of Fayetteville Street were told they would be without power for the rest of the day. Police have barricaded Fayetteville Street from Burlington Avenue to Cecil Street, beside the N.C. Central University campus, to allow the work to be done. Motorists are being re-routed on a brief detour.
The wreck was just one of two fatal accidents in Durham Wednesday morning.
In northern Durham County, a man driving a silver 2000 Chevrolet Silverado was killed when his truck rear-ended a stopped recycling truck on Bivins Road. The Silverado was traveling about 45 mph, and the driver may have been blinded by the sunlight and apparently didn’t see the recycling truck up ahead, said Trooper J.N. Hughes.
The driver of the pickup truck, Donald Wayne New, 38, of Hillsborough, was killed on impact, Hughes said. No other injuries were reported, and no charges were filed in the accident, Hughes said. The scene was cleared up by 10 a.m.
