DURHAM -- An early morning fire destroyed the Durham Rescue Mission's food storage building but injured no one. Rescue Mission officials think the blaze started when sparks from an outdoor wood furnace that had been cranked up to keep the homeless warm during the unusually cold weather fell on the roof of an old house that was used to store food.

The timing of the fire was especially unfortunate. Just a few weeks ago, Wake Christian Academy collected 10,000 cans of food for the mission. Now the mission is asking for help to replace the food lost in the fire by conducting food drives at their churches, civic clubs or offices.

All types of food can be used: canned meat; canned vegetables, fruits, soups; and staple items such as sugar, flour and cornmeal.

Food donations can be dropped off at 1201 E Main St. (the corner of Main Street and Alston Avenue). The mission also is accepting donations of money. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 11858, Durham. NC 27703 or online at www.DurhamRescueMission.org. For more information, call 491-2041.
