Duke lab evacuated after toxin spill

Durham NC.
A chemical spill Monday morning sent one Duke University employee to the hospital and caused the evacuation of a lab at a university science building. The woman sent to the hospital was working in a fourth floor lab of the Nanaline Duke Building when she fainted, according to Duke Police Assistant Chief Gloria Graham. As the woman fell, she knocked a container with a toxic inhalant called Phenol to the ground. A hazardous materials unit from the Durham Fire Department responded to the area while the floor was evacuated. The spill was contained, said Duke spokesman Keith Lawrence, and the only injury in the incident was to the woman, who sustained a bump to the head. (HS)
