DURHAM -- A winter storm warning for the Triangle ended at 7 a.m. today as freezing rain and sleet moved northeastward, leaving commuters to deal with slippery roads and ice on windshields. Schools were closed throughout the region.

Durham area residents greeted President's Day relieved that the frosty coating didn't bring the massive power outages and tree damage of early December. Power companies reported near-normal numbers of outages in the Durham area.

Schools were closed throughout the region, however, despite earlier plans to hold classes on President's Day to make up for days missed by the December ice storm. Schools in Durham, Orange, Person, Granville and Chatham counties closed today, while many businesses opened late due to uncertain road conditions.
