Durham firefighter John Barnes installs a smoke detector in a house on Massey Avenue. Firefighters went door to door Wednesday, checking and installing detectors in and around the neighborhood where a fire killed two people last week. There has been no indication of a smoke detector in that residence. The fire department recommends that:
* Detectors be installed outside each bedroom, in the kitchen and basement and on every level of the residence;
* Detectors be placed high on walls or on the ceiling;
* Detectors be placed away from ceiling fans, vents and windows;
* Batteries be tested monthly and replaced once a year;
* Detectors not be painted or ever disabled.
