Station 4 opened in 1926 on McMannan St. which is where the Durham Bulls Athletic Park now stands. In 1957 Engine 4 moved to Fayetteville St. across from North Carolina Central University. Engine 4 responded from there until 1998 when it moved into its current location on Riddle Road. Engine 4, Squad Co. 4 and Battalion 3 respond out of Station 4.
Station 4 responds first due to North Carolina Central University, many large public housing projects and numerous residential structures ranging from one bedroom homes to large historical homes. Station 4 covers parts of the Durham Freeway as well as many warehouses and apartment complexes. Historically, Station 4 units have been some of the busiest fire units in the department.
Station 4 is rich in heritage in the African American community. The previously located Station 4 on Fayetteville Street housed the first paid African American firefighters in 1957. One of which was Nathaniel Thompson who went on to become Chief of the Department. Station 4 continues to serve the City of Durham with pride and honor. |
