Medal of Valor Recipients
The Medal of Valor shall be awarded for an act of heroism that is clearly above and beyond the call of duty and exemplifies the highest degree of bravery. This is the second highest award and individual can receive.

Rescue Company 1
On 5 February 1998, Rescue Company 1 arrived first at a working house fire at 112 South Hyde Park Avenue with one subject confirmed trapped. The crew encountered heavy heat conditions without the protection of a hose line while trying to affect a rescue. The crew was forced to dive out the window as the room became untenable. The crew of Rescue 1 again made an attempt at rescuing the victim and was able to pull him out of the house suffering from severe burns. The victim is alive today because of the heroic and courageous actions of Captain Bernis Faircloth and his crew of Rescue Company 1. For his bravery and heroic actions, Captain Bernis Faircloth is awarded the Department’s second highest medal, the Medal of Valor.

Technician David Elston
Engine Company 5
On 17 March 1999, Technician David Elston was working off-duty when he stopped by Fire Station Five for a soda. While there, he heard a structure fire with subjects trapped dispatched at 3101 Mossdale Street. Technician Elston drove to the fire, arriving before any fire units. Upon his arrival he found a working house fire with a subject lying unconscious on the floor in the house. Technician Elston rescued the victim from the house and then began CPR on the victim prior to the arrival of fire units. Technician Elston then continued to care for the victim after fire and EMS units arrived. For his bravery and heroic actions, Technician Elston is awarded the Department’s second highest medal, the Medal of Valor.

Rescue Company 1
On 11 November 1999, fire companies responded to a working house fire with reported subjects trapped at 1703 Holloway Street. During the course of the fire, Technician Sean Boone of Rescue Co. 1 became disoriented and lost in the house. At this time the house was heavily involved with fire. Upon hearing that Technician Boone was lost, Captain Roberts by himself forced entry into the back of the house and began searching for Technician Boone without the protection of a hose line. Captain Roberts located Technician Boone and assisted him to safety. For his bravery and heroic actions, Captain Roberts is awarded the Department’s second highest medal, the Medal of Valor.

Technician Charles McAlexander
Engine Company 7
On 25 April 2001, Technician McAlexander was operating at a hazardous materials call on Sunset Avenue. While working on the scene, Technician McAlexander slipped on the wet rocks striking his head on the rocks. This caused significant injury to Technician McAlexander requiring immediate care and several surgeries to correct the damage. For the injuries he sustained in the line-of-duty, Technician McAlexander is awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
