Battalion 3 Headquarters

Station 4 opened in 1926 on McMannan St. In 1957 Engine 4 moved to Fayetteville St. Then in 1998 Engine 4 moved to its new location on Riddle Road.

Engine Co. 4, Squad Co. 4 and Battalion 3 staff station four. Daily staffing is 5 firefighters and 1 officer and a Battalion Chief.

Station Four responds first due to North Carolina Central University, many large public housing projects and numerous residential structures ranging from one bedroom homes to large historical homes. Station 4 covers part of the Durham Freeway as well as many warehouses’.

Historically, Station Four units have been some of the busiest fire units in the department. Station Four is rich in heritage in the African American community. The previously located Station Four on Fayetteville Street housed the first African American firefighters in Durham. One of which was Nathaniel Thompson who went on to become Chief of the Department.
