Talk to Me
| Just Breathe She finished the applesauce and most of the soup before she felt too full to eat anymore. Having eaten next to nothing since she had been in the hospital her stomach felt full and unable to handle much food. But at least she ate. Progress was progress. Nick pulled the rolling table away from the bed and then sat back in his chair. In his mind he wondered just what to do next. Try to talk with her? Give her some peace? Call someone and tell them what had just happened? He just didn’t know. Of course, in the end the decision wasn’t up to him. “Why do you continue to come up here?” Evie’s voice was quiet but cold. If fact, Nick was more than surprised she was talking at all. Over coming one obstacle in a day was a lot, but two, was more than he ever expected. But if she wanted to talk, whatever the subject, he would talk with her. Maybe it would encourage her to talk to others, like Kristyne. “Because you’re Kristyne’s best friend. And if she cares about you then so do I.” He answered. “Bullshit. You’re just trying to make brownie points with her.” Evie turned away from him in disgust. She just wished he would leave her and Kristyne alone. She wished everyone would just leave her alone. “I know you don’t like me and you have no reason to believe me, but I do care a great deal about Kristyne. Yes, I was an ass before. But I honestly never meant to hurt her. And I’m trying like crazy to make it up to her. And as far as being here with you? Well that has nothing to do with trying to make things better with Kristyne. She thinks the world of you and that is enough to tell me you must be a person worth knowing, worth helping. And further, my buddy AJ likes you too, and I trust his judgment. I am here because I want to be here, not because of any effect it might have on how Kristyne perceives me.” He was hurt that Evie felt he was just using her to get to Kristyne, but then when he thought about it he really couldn’t blame her. In her eyes he had done everything wrong and didn’t deserve any more chances with Kristyne. “Well, I don’t want you here. I don’t want you around Kristyne, but then I can control that. I don’t think you are good enough for her. If you care as much as you say you do, then care enough to just leave me alone.” She was staring at him again. She just couldn’t understand how Kristyne could be so gullible and trust him again. As far as Evie was concerned Nick Carter was an insensitive jerk who only cared about himself. Yeah he had a few good qualities, but most men have one or two tucked away somewhere. But he had shown his true, bullying colors and Evie was sure he was all wrong for Kristyne. “I’ll make a deal with you then.” Nick found himself and Ace and he was damned if he wasn’t going to use it. “What’s that?” Evie sneered. Nick just smiled. “I’ll stay away, not completely, but enough to give you room, if you continue to take care of yourself. That includes trying to eat and talking some. You may not realize this but Kristyne has literally worried herself sick over you. You continue to show improvement and let Kristyne see it so she can stop being so upset and I’ll give you your space.” Evelynn opened her mouth, then closed it. After a minute she closed her eyes and nodded her head in agreement. “Fine.” “Fine. Just as soon as Kristyne gets here I’ll make my excuses and leave.” “Fine.”
