Narrative Style |
Toni Morrison uses her characters to symbolize emotions and themes.
For example, the insurance agent at the begining of the book is more than
just a man commiting suicide; he is a messanger of freedon and flight.
He is also a symbol of man’s incapability to fly on his own. The only
way the characters learn how to fly is when they find out truths about
themselves and others. Morrison’s
chracters take on these themes because of the descriptiveness and word choice
she uses. As another testament to
Morrison’s style the names of her
characters are very symbolic. Guitar
is obviously symbolic of one of the key instrumnets in a jazz band.
The blind Biblical names symbolize the unrealistic attachment that the
blacks have to the Bible and how they ironically turn their back on the word.
Also a part of Morrison’s style is the way in which she uses punctuation and breaks up the book. The punctuation throughout the book is very real. In terms of dialouge, Morrison writes it like it would be spoken. The punctuation adds to the mood or feeling of the text withiut being overly powerful or distracting. The book is divided into two parts. Part one being chapters one through nine and part two consisting of chapters ten through fifteen.
