Determining Significant Figures

1. |
All nonzero
digits are significant.

2. |
A zero with a
bar over it, 0, is
significant. This will only occur on the left side of the decimal point.
It is only used to specify a zero is significant when the rules state it
is not significant. 456000
has 5 significant figures

3. |
If there is a
written decimal point, start from the right side of the number. All
numbers are significant until you get to only zeroes.

4. |
If there is an
implied decimal
point instead of a written decimal point, start on the left side of the number.
All numbers are significant until you get to only zeroes. |
