38. A 15.0 N force is applied to a ball at 15.0o  and a 30.0 N force is applied at 75.0o.  What is the equilibrant force?   Answer

A. 45.0N at 90o C. 39.7 N at 55.9o
B. 45.0 N at 270o D. 39.7 N at 235.9o

East Components

15.0 N x Sin 15o = 3.88 N
30.0 N x Sin 75o = 29.0 N

3.88 N + 29.0 N = 32.9 N

North Components

15.0 N x Cos 15o = 14.5 N
30.0 N x Cos 75o = 7.76 N

14.5 N  +  7.76 N = 22.3 N

Resultant = ( (32.9 N)2  +  (22.3N2 ) 1/2
Resultant = 39.7 N

                                 32.9 N
Heading = Tan -1 (------------) = 55.9o
                                 22.3 N

Equilibrant is the vector necessary to balance the resultant.

The equilibrant is the same magnitude but at 180o.

Equilibrant = 39.7 N at 235.9o
