Lesson 6

Topic: Weeds

Basic Summary: Students will further information learned in lesson 1 about plants, and distinguish why some plants are weeds and why others are not.

Lesson Objectives- SWBAT:

1. Distinguish characteristics that make a weed undesirable.

2. Know what types of situations in which some plants are considered weeds, and some condition in which the same plant is not.

3. Identify spraying techniques for weeds and proper safety when spraying.

4. Identify biological controls of weeds, and if they are better for the environment of not.

Evaluation:

Students will write a 1-2 page paper on any weed of their choice. This paper will be worth 25 points.

Preparation: Use of student knowledge that they already have from the past 5 lessons.

Materials: This will be an internet based lesson plan. Listed below will be some websites that will be used during this class period. Information students will gather will be used for their written report.

Time: Two class periods.

Opening: If available, take them to a local patch of leafy spurge, and discuss ways of why it’s a weed, and ways to control it.(USDA APHIS Homepage)

Body: Students will be able learn ways of controlling weeds both biologically and chemically. (Bureau of Land Management Homepage)

Closing: Discussion about why plants are weeds in some situations, and are not in other.(any of the four sites, or any other sites students can find from the Yahoo search)
