Standard 4

Standard 4:

To me, this method is student based learning because the main thing is to develop their critical thinking, problem solving capabilities, and their performance skills. To me, the main thing is that it is all up to the student to how they want to learn, because I feel I can't tell them what they have to learn at all, its all up to them. I feel that I can only guide them in their learning process, and instruct them to the best of my abilities. Sure, I can give them the handouts, and say this is important, and that is important, but if they are not in the mood to learn the material, its not going to do them any good what so ever.

I think there are I have some really good examples in which I can get the students to learn and have fun while they are doing it. Take lesson 7 for example. Even though I want them to learn what the importance of uses proper techniques of conservations, I think that it's just going to be up to them. With this lesson plan, I plan on giving them scenarios in which they will have to come up with solutions to solve their specific problem. With that process alone, I will be helping them develop not only their problem solving abilities, but also their critical thinking abilities, because they have to weigh the consequences of what is going to happen with their specific decisions they decide to make.

I think I also have used this standard in most of my lesson plans because I really believe that the three main areas mentioned above are really crucial to a high school student. I think with my lesson plans, they will be able to develop the good sense and know how to handle a situation properly. Another good example is the evaluation in lessons 4 and 5. Here they will be put into groups, and will be able to use their critical thinking skills in a group situation. This way, they will learn things from one another, and will know that they will be able to rely on team members if something they come to in the test gives them problems.

I have also included links down below to lesson plans where I feel Standard 4 really comes out in my teaching plans. Lesson 6 involves all three aspects as well. Each part they are to solve a specific problem faces them, how to solve it, and use for it for future situations. For example, a student will be given a weed, like Leafy spurge. It will be up to them to figure out what they want to do about the situation, like whether to totally kill the plant off, or just control it. Then, once they decide what to do, then they will be able to look for solutions to handle the situation, and be able to utilize it with whatever resources they deem feasible.
