"What is Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and Dragonball GT?"

These shows are animes, or Japanese animation. They are very popular and are centered around fighting and comic type situations. Read on.

What is Dragonball?

Dragonball is a show started by Akira in the late 80s. It is mainly about Goku and his adventures in searching for the Dragonballs. There are 7 Dragonballs, and when all seven are collected, the user can have a single wish granted. Goku meets many friends along the way, and enemies. I don’t want to give any too much of what happens, but Goku does save the world, enter three martial arts tournaments, and destroys the Red Ribbon Army, one of the most powerful armies in the world. It is more of a kiddy show (in Japan anyway) and it isn’t as full of fighting as in Dragonball Z. There are mild energy attacks used and there is NO super saiyan or fusion junk. The show is mostly based on Goku’s childhood. The show is full of comedy and surprises. It has 153 episodes..

What is Dragonball Z?

Dragonball Z continues Goku’s adventures. This is the most popular of all three series and is targeted at the teenage audience. It’s very popular even though it’s all fighting. It is the most popular anime in the world. There are 291 episodes here as well. There is a lot of blood and gore, swearing, and the like. This series focuses on Goku’s adult life. Goku now has one child (at the start) and is a most powerful ally to him and the Z Warriors (The Z Warriors, or Z Fighters, is what the team of good guys is called in DBZ). There are four main sagas (sagas are main focus points where the Z Warriors fight one or two really powerful enemies). The shortest is the Nappa/Vegeta one, the longest is the Frieza one was the longest, the Cell sags (actually divided into 3) are the most popular. Like I said before, the show’s all fighting. They’ll fight the enemies anywhere from 10 episodes all the way on up to 30 episodes. There are some very cool fight scenes in this series (and the way they’re drawn!). The artwork starts out similar to Dragonball, but it gets very good towards the end as they pull out all the stops.

What is Dragonball GT?

Dragonball GT is the third and final series. It starts out taking a page out of Dragonball’s book by featuring more antics and stuff of that nature. It focuses on Goku again, only this time, Goku is a child again. The evil emperor Pilaf wished him to be a kid again, so that’s why he’ a child. Goku, his granddaughter Pan, and friend Trunks are in a spaceship flying around the universe searching for the Black Star Dragonballs. If you collect all seven of them, you can make a wish. But you only have a year to collect them, after that time, the earth blows up (kind of a stall plot.) The first half of the 64 episodes all focus on collecting the Dragonballs, while the other half gets back into the fighting aspects of the show. The artwork isn’t as good in GT. The original creator, Akira Toriyama, isn’t even part of the series. He stopped it at Dragonball Z, but Toei (the producing company) decided to continue the series for more profits. There are a completely different set of artist and everything for this series, hence it isn’t as good. But, for die-hard DB/Z fans, it was a welcomed edition.
