My Favorite Online Stores For Hermit Crab Supplies
Sea Shell City
The Crabby Crab
A little about the stores I listed above. I use Sea Shell City the most. There are many different payment methods. You can even mail order through them. They have a fair selection of shells and toys...even cages. This is a great place with good prices. The Crabby Crab has excellent prices! Low prices on shells, and there are even hermit crab packages you can buy. You can get everything at once: cage, gravel, sponge, etc. for one low price. You can also order hermit crabs over the mail. Mine did fine. They have been alive for almost 6 months now, and still going strong. Please email me your comments if you ever shop from these places, positive or negative.
The habitat consists of a large plastic container with a ventalated lid. Half of is made of gravel and stones, and the other half is fine sand to dig in. I also have a clay bowl filled with water and a sponge inside. A piece of coala wood is also inside for playing around with. You should have plenty of shells around, because hermit crabs will grow out of theirs and switch shells. Make sure the opening is a little bigger than their recent one. I must have at least a dozen assorted shells in there. I also have tiny craft shells mixed with the sand to make kind of a beach look.
I feed them hermit crab food mostly. I crush it up to make it easier to eat, because it seems really hard to me. I mix some regular food in with some of that stuff with dried shrimp or something on it. I also give them crunched crackers, lettuce, carrots, and hermit crab treats. Chicken bones seem to be loved by hermit crabs also. I put my food in half of a seashell. Also, another water source in a seashell will keep them healthy by giving them calcium at the same time. I have two water sources. The one with the sponge, so they can rub around on it. The second in the seashell for drinking.
Make sure you have a water source at all time. Some people like to mist their cage, but misting can also lead to bacteria, which leads to most hermit crab deaths. I don't mist, but every day, I give each hermie a dip in warm water. I don't keep them under too long, because hermit crabs can drown. That's why the bowl of water should be shallow.
It's impossible to breed hermit crabs.
