The band started back in 1987 with, original members Eric Stefani, Gwen, and John Spence. Tony joined shortly after. The band was building a fairly large group of local fans and seemed to be doing pretty well when suddenly, lead singer John Spence committed suicide on December 21, 1987. His death came as a shocking blow to the remaining members, who took a break, thinking it was all over for No Doubt. Before too long, however, the band was back in business.

In 1988, Tom quit his metal band to join No Doubt, adding an edge to the group. Adrian joined in 1989, saying he'd been playing drums for eight years when he'd only been playing for about one and a half. All members of the band can remember working at Dairy Queen between gigs, wondering if their band really had a future.

They finally hit it big when Tragic Kingdom was released, just after Eric Stefani's departure. He is now an animator for The Simpsons. Thanks to No Doubt's success, Gwen Stefani and the boys are now admired and adored everywhere.
