Billy Gunn lost his World Wrestling Federation Championship match Monday night on RAW, but when you really think about it, he actually won.
Mr. Ass has a fantastic resume, on paper. But he has yet to establish himself with fans and with Federation officials as a singles competitor -- at least until Monday night on RAW.
Billy is the only superstar in Federation history to hold the Tag Team Titles on six occasions -- three times with the Smokin' Gunns, and three with the New Age Outlaws. Billy has also been a Hardcore Champion, and he's perennially a top contender for the Intercontinental Title. Of course, there was also that victory in the King of the Ring tournament, historically a catapult to bigger and better things.
Thus far, bigger and better things for Mr. Ass have included a match with The Rock at SummerSlam. When he lost, many assumed that Mr. Ass would drop back to midcard status -- including The Rock, who dismissed his opponent one day after the Pay-Per-View, putting him in the same class as the Brooklyn Brawler.
What would become of Mr. Ass? That question was answered last Monday night when Gunn met former colleague Triple H for the Federation Title.
Sure Mr. Ass had the match won twice, but more importantly he convinced us he could "main event."
He even won over the crowd, who was clearly rooting for him as the match progressed. This brings up an entirely different set of questions. Is Mr. Ass evolving into a "babyface" again?
Only time can answer that question. But whatever the case, I'd like to give Mr. Ass a little piece of advice: until you get on your knees and plead with Road Dogg and X-Pac to let you back into D-Generation X, you really ought to refrain from saying, "suck it." That's an expression that belongs to DX, a faction to which you no longer belong.
