Hum in Wichita 1998
By: nick314@chanuteks.com
Ok, for anyone not pressing the delete button in a fast and efficient
manner, here's a run-down of the Wichita show. The first band, Shaft
(which was supposed to be Shiner, I have no idea what happened to them),
sucked. Not much more to say. Any band that calls the audience "a bunch
of pussies" for not getting up and dancing to their Matchbox 20ish music,
is just no band of mine. They didn't gain any new fans, bummer. Anyways,
during their set, Matt is at the back of the venue making out the setlist.
I nervously approach him and introduce myself and talk with him for a
couple of minutes (seemed like hours). He was very cool and polite (honest
too, when talking about the "Green to Me" video). After my two or so
minutes of talking, I go back and sit down, feeling just awesome ("I just
met one of my musical heroes"). If anyone out there has the chance, I say
go for it. Only if the timing is right, though. After I sit down and
stomach another Shaft song, I head back and buy the "coming home" 45 (with
b-side, "puppets") and a shirt. Brian is sitting behind the t-shirt booth,
so I get to talk with him also. He's a pretty big guy (broke two sets of
sticks during the set). Well, long story short, Shaft is over; Hum sets
up; Hum rocks (including "the Scientists"); Matt tells some bs stories;
Hum rocks more (including "Scraper"); Brian takes a break; Matt, Jeff, and
Tim are playing with distortion and feedback for a little over five
minutes; show ends on this note (G, I believe); fans yell for more; Hum
encores with "Suicide Machine" and "Green to Me." Brian signs stuff
(including my 45, supercool). Perfect ending, minus some drunk guy hanging
all over and wanting to stage dive. Matt says to him "You'll fall. These
people aren't going to catch you." The two hour drive home begins and
ends. I fall asleep, resting nicely. The end.
Welp, there's my post (you'd think I got in a hurry towards the end).

And now a review By: Rick Riggsstrwrsfan@hotmail.com
I was at the show and met Nick. By the way Nick, what was it that Matt
said about the video? The first 2 song they played were The Pod and
Iron Clad Lou. During the second song Matt's strap came undone from the
strap lock and they had to duck tape it to the guitar. Matt told a
story about buying a new guitar and then leaving it sitting outside of a
music store in Kansas City. Needless to say it's gone now.
I got 2 shirts (which they are selling for $10 a piece), the 7" with
Puppets, and I jacked one of the HUM posters that were hanging in the
window of the venue.
That drink asshole that was trying to crowd surf was giving Matt shit
too. When He finally was trying to surf my friend Travis pulled his ass
down. Both times. That kicked ass.
The opening band did suck I saw them play before here at WSU and I
thought they sucked then too. Hey Nick...how long do you think the show
lasted? I think that it was at least 2 hours. The only thing that
sucked was some of the dumb fucking people that were there. Nick did
you see the guy with the square glasses and the yellow lenses? That
fucker was getting on my nerves.
Well thats all from me for now. ...RICK
PS. the dude that was selling the stuff said that Fillet Show might get
rereleased.
